I think this thread is getting a bit off topic from what the OP started btw.

Personally I think a T&C quiz could be implemented into the game via quizzes that already exist. For example, Rain's quiz on maple island (Which originally just asks very simple beginner questions) and the quiz from the Holy Stone (Which is already customised). This would represent a 'check' early into the game and one at mid-game. These are quests that most players will encounter but won't provide anything intrusive over the original maple.

Just want to point out that this was a thing in the old source, the questions are not made up.

Thats taking it way too far isn't it? Yea of course the government doesn't hand out rewards like that since that would cost them actual money. What does it cost you guys to give out something like 10k or even 5k nx through a coded quest? You just implement it and it serves its purpose for the life of the server without costing you a dime. Are you really against giving players a tiny reward that doesn't cost you anything to help prevent them from getting banned and spread awareness of the T&C?

Lastly I just want to make it clear that this feedback is solely just an idea to combat a serious problem and it's purpose is just to get the staff to think about how to tackle the problem. If you guys have a better idea to spread T&C awareness then great go for it, doesn't have to be my in game quiz idea for all I care. All that matters is that players are more aware so let's move away from the specifics and look at the bigger picture

    Thank you

I'm not interested in implementing this suggestion at all. It would considerably reduce the number of banned people.

Ban appeals are a major source of entertainment in Royals.

    Please reconsider.

It has absolutely nothing to do with "cost" but rather everything to do with sending the wrong message. Again, you are rewarding someone for doing what they already supposed to be doing, it doesn't make sense to me.

You can also see it as 'motivating them to do something they should be doing'. Not rewarding, motivating. :p

I'm not defending blissful ignorance, but it stands in sharp contrast with people who break rules on purpose. I've read the T&C twice, and there are still parts I don't know because it's long, boring, and besides the common sense "no hacking", some of it's not as black and white.

It would also help if there was a T&C link on the main page, and not just on the forums. Also I think it would be nice if you guys made a distinction in the rules and amendment to allow a 3 or 7 ban before a perma ban for "saying they will RWT". I understand Sila's point, but I also want to express that again, there is a difference between knowingly breaking a rule and breaking one that, for all intensive purposes hurts no one. It seems like you guys are capable of being able to read logs to see when someone actually RWT's. I dunno, I guess I'm just against a capital punishment for this. We don't expel kids from school for pulling a fire alarm, we suspend them for a week, then expel them if they do it again.

Just for clarity, this is for RWT, not for harassment. But again, I can verbally harass a player and get a warning basically. Just seems like the punishments don't line up that's all.

Seeing as the quiz idea is not going to happen ~

Ah yeh ofc, forgot about that.

I guess why I suggested these quests is because they are pre-exisiting quiz quests that most people will encounter and complete - thereby eradicating the need for a 'reward' such as NX.

Sure a reward for doing something right shouldn't be handed out all the time, but what's so wrong about rewarding someone every now and then for doing something right? It's not like this suggestion is about rewarding someone every time a player keeps to the rules. It's a one time thing for doing the quest and showing you understand the T&C. There are many instances in real life where people are rewarded for things they are supposed to do. It sends them a good message that their proper and supposed attitude is appreciated and acts as a positive motivator for the person being rewarded to continue to be good. Its a good and healthy thing to reward people occasionally for doing what they are supposed to do

Well you seem to get the point of the feedback which I appreciate. In regards to why I suggested a lvl requirement and a daily attempt limit:

    1. A lvl requirement combats what you mentioned about abusing the nx reward ( if that would even be the reward). If the lvl requirement was 30 it would be early enough since players just starting will almost always achieve lvl 30 within the day and it would also be high enough where it would be stupid of someone to lvl a new character to 30 (takes about 2 hours) just to abuse the small nx gift. Also I suggested nx because if the gift is useless then players wouldn't bother with it in the first place.

    2. As you said it's a problem if players just click through all the options of the quiz without actually reading them. Without some kind of consequence such as a daily limit, most people would click through all the options without reading anything.

There's always a compromise to @John and @Nineskies debate about reward vs encouragement. If the game required players to pass the quiz before leaving Maple Island through a custom NPC nearby Shanks, then it's technically "rewarding" the player by making them do what they're supposed to. From what I've seen, account sharing, RWT, and smega bans are the most common reasons people are banned due to not reading the T&C.

Another suggestion I would implement is to link the T&C in the game whenever the player clicks on a specific text/button. As trivial as it may be, I find that there are a lot of people who have no idea where to find the list of rules for the game. People already miss the obvious links and messages above the shoutbox (e.g "Don't request staff support in the shoutbox.") so it's reasonable to assume that even if you were to place links on every page of the forum to the T&C, there's always at least several people who have not noticed it. A lot of players never visit the forums once they create their characters so this may help (you vote through the main site, not the forums).

If the player guesses incorrectly enough times, they'll have to start remembering the answers to the quiz. IMO, if you made the quiz at least 5-7 questions long, this issue becomes insignificant.

I already hate the fact that a majority of the players on this server read the rules after they've been banned just to argue their case on a ban appeal thread. Common sense usually includes knowing not to use illegal programs to manipulate the game, but this server has rules that are less known probably due to Nexon's inability to enforce them on official servers. However, I understand that people wouldn't spend their time reading walls of text just for a game they found on the internet. Unless it affected me IRL, there is a slim chance I would do anything more than skim the T&C of a service/website and I believe many others feel the same.

Having to pass the quiz before being able to get off maple island is a fantastic idea. Although I think a player needs to memorize both the question along with the answers so I'm not sure if just making it long will be enough for people to actually get the points. Maybe also have each attempt cost 300 mesos? Mesos are pretty limited in maple island so players will have to go ask around or farm mesos if they get it wrong too many times

Do you guys want people to know the rules or not? You guys wrote it so people could see it right? So what happens if people don't see it, too bad so sad? I guess that's one way to go about it but why not help point your finger at the rules for those that don't, what harm does that do? There are many non-intrusive ways to implement this, a lot of people above have already brought up many great ideas. What do you guys think is more informative, a notice saying welcome to mapleroyals or rwt isn't allowed? Even if this only helps 10 people understand the rules better that's still 10 people you're helping who wouldn't know the rules otherwise to know the rules. In my office we have signs in designated areas that says no eating or drinking. To many people this is common sense and redundant but we have them anyways just to act as a friendly reminder.

By encouraging people to read the rules you're doing 2 things, preventing people from breaking the rules therefore alleviating the amount of work you guys have in the ban appeal, creating a better vibe for the server, it's a win-win for both parties. You don't need to reward players for knowing something they should know but bringing awareness to it doesn't hurt.

Also remember, what's common sense to you might not be common sense to others.

Having only vaguely read all responses & arguements here i'm just gonna try to bump in and say that
In this day and age of thick skulls and short attention spans, i don't think trying to reinforce it wherever possible would be a very bad idea.

Maybe it looks like it isn't worth it right now if we look from a developers perspective. There are other - way more important things to focus on right now.
However, in the more distant future i think this would be a nice attempt to cut down on all the undeserved bans.

Anyhow, this doesn't mean it has to be done through a quiz, but simply implement something that attempts to make new players aware of the fact that especially here; Not giving the T&C a good read can be a very slippery slope.
Royal Tips, in my opinion; Are all lazy, semi-fixes to this - the frequency on Royal Tips is completely out of control, and i doubt they provide enough information in themselves for new people to "survive" here.
Let's not resort to cheap workarounds that bedrocks on poor game design.

Give it a shot. Maybe it'll work out for the better, maybe it'll work out for the worse.
There's no way to truly tell until it has been implemented into an environment where it actually matters.

I'm sure you can relate. [IMG]

From my observations its mostly RWT "jokes", account sharing and slurs people get banned for without knowing its against the rules.
If its possible id suggest adding language filter to the game (the one that replaces words with *****). I think that would prevent a lot of bans of people saying the n word and other slurs. If people try to bypass it in whatever way then they can get banned, especially since it should be obvious that a word isn't allowed when it gets censored. Same thing with smegas. If not censoring individual words, a smega could just not get broadcast if it contained a prohibited word, instead of triggering an auto ban like it used to in the old source. I think its pretty silly and unnecessary when people get banned for using such words as just slang with no harmful intentions, when a language filter could be used instead to prevent such words.

For account sharing and RWT "jokes", a maple tip for each would be enough imo, and a general "We strongly suggest you read the MapleRoyals ToS to avoid unnecessary bans" type of tip (unless this is already a thing and i'm just stupid). I think that would increase awareness about the rules just as much as a quiz, and it wont interfere with the gameplay. Other than that i think adding a simple "We suggest you read the rules" to the npc "Sera" (the one at the very start of the game" [IMG] would be nice. While people may skip it, it can't hurt for the ones who actually read it, and it wouldn't look out of place in whats basically the "welcome to the server" npc. It's also possible to add some kind of question at the end that requires you to read through the text.

Other than the offences mentioned above, i think the rest of the rules should be pretty obvious to everyone (except for maybe using edited files of some sorts) and shouldn't require a quiz.

or, crazy idea here, we could just not ban people for, you know, cracking jokes
"GMs GMs, please come quick! my feelings were hurt! you must remove this person from the community immediately! i didn't like something they said!"
grow a thicker skin, holy shit, how do you function day to day out in the real world?

it's called virtue signalling. these people act offended on the behalf of others to try and show how they are a "good, thoughtful, kind, and conscientious person" when really their prime motivator is gaining social acceptance and/or getting others to like them. do they really care about issues like the plight of the average african-american? no. they just want people to think they do. if they really cared they'd take time out of their day to do something in the real world, not policing what people say and think on the internet.

here's a good definition from urban dictionary
    Virtue Signalling
To take a conspicuous but essentially useless action ostensibly to support a good cause but actually to show off how much more moral you are than everybody else.
Fred: I see George has changed his profile picture to show his support for refugees.
Barbara: Has he donated money or time? Is he giving English lessons? Is he making a room available?
Fred: No, no, he's just virtue signalling.

even censoring it is still taking it too far in my opinion

Because the server owner, neither the Staff have any tolerance for the usage of such language, and this is not going to be up for discussion either.

Or, you can adapt to the fact that this is Matt's server, and not yours, meaning you don't get to dictate what we should do.

I'd like to put some emphasis on that a lot of comments are indeed going off-topic, and that if this continues we might have to start deleting such comments as they don't belong here.
This thread is for the discussion of a potential ingame quiz about the T&C, not about what rules you dislike or disagree with.
I personally don't have too much of an opinion on the whole Quiz topic, while I do believe it would be beneficial I can't really imagine where you would place it to not be annoying while still reaching the majority of the players. (As the majority of the characters left Maple Island already and are already past 3rd job)

I agree that it doesn't reach the majority of the current playerbase, but implementing it in the places I suggested will at least reach future players and secondary characters that most players also create.
