Hurtful? Yes. Racist? No.

Afaik the term was used to insult, but similar to calling someone an idiot..
Is it the right to do? No. Good behaviour? No. But I can see why the language was used considering the conflict between the two users. Where's the context to shows it was racist and not plainly just an insult?

I'm from the UK and I'm white. If someone called me a monkey, they'd be calling me an idiot.

The word is clearly not inherently racist. I concede, it possibly could be depending on the context in which it is used and who it is directed towards, however other uses for the word exists and it is also used to refer to someone as an idiot. Next we will be banning for harmful expressions like cheeky monkey..

A word can be racist in some cultures and not in others, and a few people have confirmed that 'monkey' is indeed racist in their culture. However, Sharon being uneducated on this the first time is understandable, but should have still followed up with an apology and an immediate stop to referring to Raony as a 'monkey'. I agree that Sharon was in the wrong here, and I would support Raony making a separate report if he wishes to as it is harassment/hate speech. Despite this, I do not think that this disqualifies Sharon from reporting a separate incident of harassment, and does not justify the overturning of Raony's ban - which is the main point of this thread.

 

As soon as I named my monkey i sent Tim as a meme(I’m dumb and it aint funny i know) and I changed it immediately. People with inappropriate pet names been asked to change and got unbanned and so did I. It couldn’t even offend him cause he didn’t see it lol. Again, it wasn’t in a racist manner, and I’m deeply apologize if anyone find it racist(as I understand now about certain people who take monkey as “n word” and not as dumb).

Hypothetically, if I wasn't aware of your race or country of origin and if I had called you a monkey -- this would be a hurtful gesture, correct. But hurtful due to the fact I voiced my opinion of you as an idiot, numbskull, fool, halfwit, nincompoop or a dunce. It has nothing to do with race, but instead would probably be based off something you said/did.

 

A bigot is not a racist, they are not interchangeable terms. And glad I hope you take it personally that I think your plee for humanity is disingenuous and just trying to distract from a bigger issue.

Here's the thing, yeah you know what, I could talk to all of Brazil and get different answers but there is no thinktank, database, or documented proof that Monkey is nationalist insult. If it was, then African **Americans** wouldn't be insulted by it. I call people who are dumb on the internet monkeys, I don't know their ethnicity, this individual has posted selfies reflecting it, therefore cannot be bigoted or racist.

Depends why that person called you a monkey. If it is because of something you said/did which they don't agree with and find idiotic then it is just hurtful. If it is due to your privilege and/or status within your greater community, due to your ethnicity and race then it very well possibly can be seen as racist. But this is not what happened here. Exactly why context matters.
