Making them untradable is more or less the same issue more and more people are having. Once you fill up your other accounts full of mesos and your storage, you'll have no other choice than to either use them all and put them into assets or transfer those mesos to another account and still take a bite of mesos. On the other hand, sure you evaded taxes, but you already devalued the item to 100m less than what it's actually worth because everything you buy one, 100m is taken away permanently. People aren't going to value it at 2.1b, they'll value it at 2b each.
Why are we so convinced we need more mesos sinks again? Do we have any evidence of rampant inflation?
No, because the value of a meso will always be a meso. I doubt the rising and dropping value of mesos will flux the prices of anything small scale like scrolls, but it might affect many of those higher in prices items.
That's not what inflation/deflation is though. It is the change in relationship of the value of money to goods, i.e., mesos to scrolls/equips. I don't think its right to judge inflation/deflation by the price of "higher-priced items", which I presume you mean scrolled/perfect equips/other rare things that are well over 1B+. The prices for those items are determined more by supply and demand, since there are so few of them in circulation. For example, having two bidders instead of one bidder for one of those items can blow prices through the roof, independent of inflation. Inflation should be judged by prices of relative commodities, for us being white/chaos/BVM/int gear/ap resets/tp rocks/etc. And from what I've seen from joining here (~2 months), those prices have TANKED. I am concerned that deflation is already among us. And deflation kills economies because it encourages people to hoard money and not spend. I find it hard to support more meso sinks.
2 months is not a good sample size to determine how the economy will become in the future. Here's what happened in just one year since I've been here: White Scrolls: 200m - 330m Chaos Scrolls: 200m - 290m AP Resets: 5m - 9m BVM: 75m - 250m Int Gear: Stayed the same Teleport Rocks: Stayed the same Also, you're looking at meso sinks like they provide nothing and just there to exist. I'm looking at meso sinks as a service charge much like Owls.
Agreed it is not, but it IS the most recent signal in the market. You are proposing more sinks, which goes AGAINST the most recent signal that we've seen over two months. Look, I'm not saying we eliminate all the sinks we have. I'm just saying don't advocate for more, when most recent evidence says it might be counter-productive.
That chaos/ws prices drop is expected, they are very expensive and require lots of funds to use, more ppl = more scrolls. ap resets dropping in price is obvious with the massive player increase (lots of new players needing quick funds) and most of the high leveled people are done hp washing. int gear same as above people hp washing are one of the bigger uses of those items, some don't spend enormous funds on their mages, they use them more as meso machines. tp rocks more then anything should drop in price, since they are not supposed to work cross continent and is something confirmed to get changed with the new source, so buying lots of them could be a bad investment. I don't see any signs of deflation, a market goes up and down.
I agree that the case for deflation is not clear-cut. But prices going down right now, which is definitely NOT inflation. Why are we advocating for more meso sinks which is a solution against inflation. I'm saying just stay put and don't make decisions that is against the current direction the market is going. @Plenty: repeating your statement after I answered yours is kinda obnoxious. Let me remind you that although my observations are over only 2 months, it has been only ~6 months since merchant taxes were implemented, which as shown by @Matt's post, are a bigger sink than the owls. So you are proposing more sinks, when 1/3 of the relevant sample suggests deflation, and that 1/3 happens to be the most recent 1/3 of the data. Do you see why I disagree?
I think the amount of mesos that some people on the server have basically proves that more meso sinks are a good idea. The fact that Plenty and others have suggested special items to be worth X mesos to be introduced means that there is a problem somewhere.
I do, but I also disagree with you using real world economics in a video game. Prices always go up and down. Just because they're going slightly down right now doesn't mean that we don't need mesos sinks. Like @Matt said, there are people who have hoarded billions in assets. If any one of them decided that it's time to buy up all the White Scrolls and skyrocket the price, nothing is stopping them. They'll offer the best price and that will be the going price for a long time.
A good money sink is changing the tax system right now you can buy 100 arrows for 999k each and it counts it as separate trades e.g. tax for under 1m instead of the total amount e.g. 99.9m which is what you buy for. It only works when you trust the person you trade with.
^ that's the point of the item. you can only make it with 2.1b, but it's worth 2b. ofcourse after the first transfer, people will still be abled to transfer 2b between users without any tax, but the 100m taken from the first seller is already enough. Matt, you don't have to think about a solution alone, someone has already done it!, Countries! You can find information on how to avoid inflation all over the internet. some countries tax you more the richer you are, maybe this is the solution you are looking for?
Maple Story use long (int32) for mesos variable. This makes economic problem hard to solve. Also, i believe the period of the year (summer) makes items deflate. Once summer is over price are going to go up again (if new source doesnt change player base). If you want to compare number, take same period of time over a year. Edit: thats what happened last summer.
