Any chance this can be changed to be similar to a GM event where we all meet up at a specific time and play the entire thing? Having 48 hours per matchup is going to make this take over a week. I’d sign up if so-just not interested in having to schedule and attend matches every other day for an extended period of time. If not, best of luck and have fun y’all!
Making this entire tournament in one specific time would be unfair though ... This way, anyone who wants to take on others can join but with the way you suggested, only the ones that can log in during that specific time can participate .. We all have different time zones and if we all wanna join, this is the best way .. Your suggestion can work for something like: OMOK EU Tournament OMOK Americas Tournament OMOK Asia Tournament OMOK SEA Oceania Tournament Then winners can have their own showdown tournament and so on ... But if only 1 tournament to determine omok champion is what we're looking for instead of separating by time zones, then this is the way to do it ..
Yeah, but life isn’t fair and that’s just how it works with events (they’re scheduled at a specific time). You’re either able to be online or you aren’t. If y’all wanna cater towards everyone that’s totally cool, it’s your event to do what you want with. I’m just explaining what would make it so that I sign up since I’ve seen OP spamming this thing nonstop (not saying this in a bad way) to get people to participate.
I appreciate your suggestion, but it will never work because omok match between two experienced players may take 10~15 minutes or more per game. Best two out of three means one match may take anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes or longer. If 10 people sign up, to finish the entire tournament double elimination may take half of a day. Not everyone can get online at a specific time, and not everyone can stay for hours for an event. Also omok is a very small and niche community. All the players are spreading out thin. It will be next to impossible to get enough people for a proper tournament if we want to do it at one time and finish in one go. Life isn't fair, but you shouldn't hold a player hostage holding a player there for hours if he or she is winning. It wouldnt be wise to make a winner player forfeit just because he or she can't stay on for extended period of time to finish the tournament in one go. Like I said above. Omok is a very small and niche community begin with. Not because people dont want to join, but getting the words out and reach those people is hard.
Just to add to this. Previous omok game I hosted had 16 people signed up. Double elimination takes 32 best two out of three matches to finish. Even if all the matches takes 10 minutes (impossible if two experienced players know what they are doing), it takes 5.5 hours to finish 32 games. In average, two out of three matches takes 30 minutes to finish. That will be 16 hours for one tournament. So yea, asking players to stick around for 5.5~16 hours is unreasonable.
You could always split it up into 2-3 days similar to how most tournaments work (prelims, prelims/wildcard, playoffs/finals) so that players don't have to stay on for such a long period the way they would had it been done in only one day. The biggest deterrent for me is the fact that, as you mentioned, there will be many rounds/matches played, and with 48 hours in between each match you're bound to have it lasting a bare minimum of like 8 days (4 matches) and possibly upwards of 10-20 days depending on the amount of participants. Having to devote time every other day to playing matches for 1-3 weeks straight is a huge burden (at least, for me it is). You're making a player forfeit if they can't get on to play their match(es) either way you approach it. Personally I'm no huge Omok player (current record 0-0 lol) but I'm open to participating for both fun and for the prizes (which are quite appealing). I'm not sure if the only willing participants are a part of the "niche Omok community" but as mentioned earlier, it's your event and your opinion is the influencing factor, not mine. I do agree that getting participants for something like this is a challenge, but I think the challenge is more based around the tedious nature of a tournament and how it's (inevitably) structured. Either way, best of luck to both you and the other participants. Hope y'all end up making it work and have a great time. edit: That's how tournaments typically work though, is it not? I've never gone to an event where I compete in one match every 48 hours for consecutive weeks at a time. That's typically done for a playoff format rather than a tournament. I get that this isn't nearly as competitive as athletics and such, but I just can't get behind such an extended duration for a tournament. That's just me though, and obviously my opinion does not mean a thing since I am not hosting it lol.
Please visit my previous omok thread and read through the rules below before saying I force people to forfeit against their will. https://royals.ms/forum/threads/omok-double-elimination-tournament.108726/#post-601589 In the previous tournament players pmed me or contacted me because they have time conflict with the match up, and I simply re arranged a different match up so both players can meet easier. I only force players to forfeit if they didn't put in any effort on contacting me or the other player, and MIA without letting anyone know their plan to meet. I have not run into that issue yet because everyone in this community is friendly and responsible.
My apologies as I did not see that part when reading the rules (somehow, guess ya boi is blind). Personally I think that all tournaments force forfeits for those who can't/don't make their match times unless it's something out of their control such as weather conditions, flight delays, terrorism, etc. but if you're not for that it's your decision to make, you do you boyo!
Yea I appreciated your feedback. I wasn't going to host a second omok tournament because it takes a lot of time and energy as a host. A lot more than I thought. I hosted this one because I got a few requests to do a second one the same way I did the first one. Plus I have two generous sponsors this time =D
Likewise with my appreciation for hosting it! Even if I cannot participate it is definitely something beneficial for the community. VERY generous sponsors to say the least lol
What I feel would work best is to have a periodic 'omok night' that is a separate event from the tournament itself. (I had set up Omok nights in my GMS days which did pretty well). The purpose of an 'Omok Night' event is to bring players together to play omok for funs. If this was an already established event then it is likely that players participating could attend the event play several of their tournament rounds during the event. But in general I agree with Jake on the scheduling format.
@ImJakeFromStateFarm @itsKate @Guus @Anhur @Raflos @Bolt @Tiangua If you guys are still planning on entering the tournament with the optional entry fee, please trade me a ws/cs before the 24th. I will provide SS and post them here as record. I guess unless the polling result change within the next 3 days.
OvaryActing, OvaryAct, GrassyAss, imColdBlood, FoodPoison, or FemaleDoggy. I should be on one (or all) of those if I'm online.
Received feedback and a less confusing way of explaining how the two buckets of prizes works. TLR you can enter without entry fee to win mesos, or you can enter with optional entry fee for a chance to win a bigger prize.
