You were being a massive dick, anyone can understand why he defamed you. Was it against the rules? Yes. Doesn't mean you weren't a dick to him.

I've had several altercations with players, however, I've never actually reported anyone. Not saying sometimes a report isn't necessary, under harrassment etc.
It says alot about who you are whether you try and handle it yourself or just go snitch report.

Actually, your situation could have been avoided entirely if YOU had decided to communicate him about it instead of using the defame fiction at first. If you didn't want him to loot it you could have said so BEFORE defaming.
Furthermore, even after that you had an oportunity to diffuse the situation, but instead you choose to instigate it more. You could have just accepted the fact that anyone can loot something you drop, and people will if you drop something in the FM. But you, for whatever reason, decided that you don't like this function and take it out on the guy, who shows his displeasure by mass defaming you. You had multiple chances to mediate the situation, instead you make it worse.

This is what your report would look like in a real life scenario.

You: "Hmm, I don't like the way this guy looks"
    *punches his face*
Other dude: "Wtf man, what was that for?"
You: " You look poor, that bothers me :] "
    *other dude punches back harder*
You: "Ugh! the nerve of this guy, i can get you arrested for this"
    *Calls police*
    Other dude: "o.o"

My personal thoughts - You most definitely instigated this, even gave off the impression that you were fishing for that bad reaction. And afterwards, poured salt on the wound you caused first by getting him banned.

Edit: Felt like I should give some advice to you along with this.
Don't want to get defamed? Try being a nice person for a change

Yeah, nah. Punching someone in the face is still assault, this situation was more:
Other dude: Spits on the sidewalk (legal)
Me: I don't like what you have just done (legal)
Other dude *punches me in the face (illegal)
Me: You have assaulted me for expressing my freedom of speech, i'm calling the police

NOTE FOR ADMINS: This thread has gotten off-topic and devolved into a flame-war, i'm sure everyone would appreciate this thread being closed.

There's no need for this thread to be closed, it can just be brought back on topic.
Since we're all mature (at least I assume), we don't need to grasp onto the assistance of an admin straight away.
I would thus request that we get back on the topic, and also for people to stay out if they have nothing constructive to say.

Ok, so this is getting a bit off topic, so I'll try to reign it back in. Lets get the facts straight:
    1) Berchtold was allowed to defame the other party. The reason he did it is completely irrelevant. This is just part of the game.
    2) The opposing party was NOT allowed to defame Berchtold three times. It was considered mass defaming. He broke the rules. Simple as that.
    3) Mass defaming reports are 100% case by case. The GMs do take provocation into consideration, and have let Mass Defame reports slip by because of that. That being said, the GMs did not feel what Berchtold did warranted the 3 defames that he received. This case has been settled and should NOT be argued here. If you want to use it as an example, that's fine, but do not argue whether or not this ban should have occurred.
(Took me a while to write this and there were posts in between so sorry for getting back on that for a bit)

That all being said, this thread is about MODIFYING the rules that are currently in place. What has happened in the past has happened, and we're trying to look toward the future here. We're discussing what changes could be made so that the community can feel as though we have a more fair system for everyone. As of now, I believe that a lot of the community believes that there are an excessive number of reports that could be handled internally. We're trying to figure out a way so that we can promote this as opposed to bringing GMs into the question.

I'd like to highlight one of the proposals from my last post again:
I would like the Minor and Major offense forums to be switched. I believe that by doing this, we will encourage players to place Minor Reports for what has been done first. Many of the things that we're considering petty were, in some way, against the rules. By placing this first, it will hopefully promote them (or at least trick them) into placing it as a Minor Offense first.
    [Warning Random Psych Analysis]
As it stands now, I believe that by putting GM reports before Minor Offenses, we are promoting a GM's power above the community's. We're saying "Come here to report first, and if its not really that bad, then move on to the Minor Offenses.
I want to change that. I want it to be "Come here and warn both the community and the offender first. What you did is wrong, and I hope this will help you learn how to fix what you've done. If you really think what he did was THAT bad and you REALLY need a GM to give input on this, then take the time to move on to the Major Reports forum."

We're trying to help the mentality of the community. We want to be able to be independent and to solve issues on our own. That is what we're trying to achieve in this thread. (At least thats what I think)

Nah, I can guarantee you that none of these people would even speak up for themselves in real life, let alone punch the other person in the face. They'd walk away like nothing happened.
