    Introduction

Hello you beautiful new Ice/Lightning people. I'm very happy you decided to create an Ice/Lightning Mage, which is the best decision you’ll ever make!

Hi, I’m PalmTree, a level 200 Ice/Lightning Arch Mage. I’ve written this guide to share my first-hand experience and shed light on the mechanics of the class from a different perspective.

    LUK or LUKless build?

LUKless: Why LUKless? INT is equivalent to Magic, which means that for every ability point spent on LUK, you miss out on exactly one magic attack. You also gain more MP from the increased INT amount. Therefore, it is much more effective to spend AP on a pure INT mage.

LUK: Why LUK? Having base LUK will allow you to wear higher leveled gear which provide better protection against attacks. Adding your ability points into LUK is not worth it because trading off a higher damage output for unnecessary defense is useless when Magic Guard is sufficient for any end-game boss. @Amanion has LUK and is proud of her Ice/Lightning. So don’t be so ashamed to make one yourself!

    AP Build

    Level 1 - 200: +5 INT
If you want base LUK, it's recommended to keep your base LUK between 20-30. You'll gradually receive more LUK through equips, so there's no need to add extra!

    SP Build

First Job (Note: If you over-level from Grendel, you will still gain that 1 SP)

    Level 8: +1 Energy Bolt (1)
Level 9: +3 Improved MP Recovery
Level 10: +2 Improved MP Recovery, +1 Improved Max MP Increase
Level 11-13: +3 Improved Max MP Increase (MAX)
    Level 14-19: +3 Magic Claw (18)
Level 20: +2 Magic Claw (MAX), +1 Magic Guard
    Level 21-26: +3 Magic Guard (19)
Level 27: +1 Magic Guard (MAX), +2 Improved MP Recovery (7)
Level 27-30: +3 Improved MP Recovery (MAX)

    End Result:
[IMG] Improved MP Recovery (16/16) MAX
[IMG] Improved Max MP Increase (10/10) MAX
    [IMG] Magic Guard (20/20) MAX
    [IMG] Magic Armor (0/20) USELESS
    [IMG] Energy Bolt (1/20)
    [IMG] Magic Claw (20/20) MAX

Energy Bolt is required to unlock Magic Claw, and will enable you to attack without whacking the mobs. Maxing both Improved MP Recovery and Improved Max MP Increase will give you more MP each time you level. Magic Guard is super important. Without it, you will die so be sure to MAX MAGIC GUARD. Magic Claw will be your main attack till 2nd job.

Second Job (After job advancing, you will gain one SP point)

    OPTION 1:
    Level 30: +1 Teleport
    Level 31-40: Thunder Bolt (MAX)
    Level 41-46: +3 Teleport
Level 47: +1 Teleport (MAX), +2 MP Eater
Level 48-53: +3 MP Eater (MAX)
    Level 54-59: +3 Meditation
Level 60: +2 Meditation (MAX), +1 Cold Beam
    Level 61-69: +3 Cold Beam

    Level 70: +2 Cold Beam (MAX), +1 Slow (1)

    OPTION 2:
    Level 30: +1 Teleport
    Level 31-40: Thunder Bolt (MAX)
Level 41-50: +3 Cold Beam (MAX)
    Level 51-56: +3 MP Eater
    Level 57: +2 MP Eater (MAX), +1 Teleport (2)
    Level 58-63: +3 Teleport (MAX)
    Level 64-69: +3 Meditation (18)
    Level 70: +2 Meditation (MAX), +1 Slow (1)

    End Result:
    [IMG] MP Eater (20/20) MAX
    [IMG] Meditation (20/20) MAX
    [IMG] Teleport (20/20) MAX
    [IMG] Slow (1/30) USELESS
    [IMG] Cold Bean (30/30) MAX
    [IMG] Thunder Bolt (30/30) MAX

The first thing you want when you advance is teleport for better mobility. Thunder bolt is next due to its high area of effect damage and will make training a lot faster. You will be using Thunder bolt all training until third job.
    Option 1:

    - Max Teleport next because you will be utilizing that skill to get around the maps while training. By maxing it in the beginning, you will be using less MP and covering more distance. After, raise MP Eater next to recover more MP from mobs. Next, allocate SP on Meditation for +20 more magic. Lastly, raise the rest of your points to Cold Beam (and +1 slow). This is a single-target skill that is strong against fire-based monsters.
    Option 2:
    - Max Cold Beam next because it will be your strongest single-target attack until till the third job. Raise MP Eater next to recover more MP from mobs. Afterward, max teleport to increase its range and reduce MP costs. Allocate the rest of your SP on Meditation for +20 more magic unless you are willing to spend money on Wizard Potions. The last point will be used on slow because it is practically useless. (You could always max MP Eater before Cold Beam to use less MP pots)

    Third Job

    Level 70: +1 Ice Strike
    Level 71-79: +3 Ice Strike (28)
Level 80: +2 Ice Strike (MAX), +1 Elemental Amplification (1)
    Level 81: +2 Elemental Amplification (3), +1 Spell Booster
    Level 82-84: +3 Spell Booster (10)
    Level 85: +1 Spell Booster (11), +2 Elemental Amplification (5)

You can MAX Spell Booster before Elemental Amplification for faster spell-casting
    Level 86-93: +3 Elemental Amplification (29)
Level 94: +1 Elemental Amplification (MAX), +2 Spell Booster (13)
    Level 95-96: +3 Spell Booster (18)
Level 97: +2 Spell Booster (MAX), +1 Partial Resistance (1)
Level 98-103: +3 Partial Resistance (MAX)
    Level 104-113: Thunder Spear (MAX)
    Level 114-119: +3 Seal (18)
Level 120: +2 Seal (MAX), +1 Elemental Composition

    End Result:
    [IMG] Partial Resistance (20/20) MAX
    [IMG] Element Amplification (30/30) MAX
    [IMG] Seal (20/20) MAX
    [IMG] Spell Booster (20/20) MAX
    [IMG] Elemental Composition (1/30)
    [IMG] Ice Strike (30/30) MAX
    [IMG] Thunder Spear (30/30) MAX

Ice Strike freezes mobs and will be super helpful when it comes to training. Adding 3 points to Elemental Amplification will unlock Spell Booster and Seal. With booster left at level 11, it will increase your attacking speed. The higher the level, the longer the skill will last. For the next few levels, add all points to Elemental Amplification to increase your damage. Then max Partial Resistance for more defense on magic attacks. Max Thunder Spear as your new special single-target attacking skill. Lastly max Seal, and one point on Elemental Composition. It doesn’t matter which skill you max, Seal or Elemental Comp because Ice Strike will be more helpful for training. (If you choose to NOT raise any points on Thunder Spear, then feel free to spend it on Elemental Composition)

Gear that is useful for 3rd job grinding:
This is my opinion on decent gear to have as you are leveling up. If you are funded and can obtain godly gear, skip this!
    25-30+ INT Zakum Helmet
    Optional: Broken Glasses (LPQ)
    15-23+ INT Overall (Bathrobe/Doroness)
    15 TMA Earrings
    10-15 TMA Cape
    10-15+ TMA Gloves
15-25+ TMA Shield (Maple shield/Ester shield/Maple Magician Shield)
    Optional: Squishy shoes (KPQ)
Elemental Wand 3/4 (level 70): Wand 3 will enhance ice skills (Ice Strike/Blizzard) and will be used until you can use Elemental Wand 7. Wand 4 will enhance lightning skills (Thunder Spear/Chain Lightning) until you can use Elemental Wand 8. For large AOE grinding purposes, people choose Elemental Wand 3 and Elemental Wand 7 as their end-game weapon. (thank you @Inusama for the suggestion!)

    Fourth Job

    Level 120: +2 Blizzard (2), +1 Chain Lightning (1),
    Level 121-129: +3 Blizzard (29)
    Level 130: +1 Blizzard (MAX), +2 Maple Warrior (2)
Level 131-136: +3 Maple Warrior (MAX)
Level 137-145: +3 Chain Lightning (28) **Note: Or Infinity
Level 146: +2 Chain Lightning (MAX), +1 Ifrit (1) **Note: Or Infinity
    Level 147-155: +3 Ifrit (28)
    Level 156: +2 Ifrit (MAX), +1 anything
Level 157-200: Feel free to add anything you want!

**Note: If you're not interested in using Ifrit or Chain Lightning, I recommend maxing Infinity since this skill was buffed due to increased prices in NLC pots. You can MAX Infinity first followed by Chain Lightning and Ifrit respectively.

    End Result:
    [IMG] Maple Warrior (20/20) MAX
    [IMG] Big Bang
    [IMG] Mana Reflection (30/30) MAX
[IMG] Infinity [freezes the use of your MP, so you can cast moves for that duration]
    [IMG] Blizzard (30/30) MAX
    [IMG] Chain Lightning (30/30) MAX
    [IMG] Ifrit (30/30) MAX
[IMG] Ice Demon (USELESS, super weak damage)

Max Blizzard first for more damage and a higher chance to one hit mobs at a lower level. Maxing Maple Warrior next will increase all your stats by 5% first for Maple Warrior 10, then 10%. It's not totally required to have Maple Warrior 20, but it's a nice addition (plus more magic). Chain lightning is helpful for defeating mobs that are immune to ice. Max Ifrit next. The summoning skill is useful for semi-afk farming and finishing off mobs you nearly one hit. *Remember: You could always raise Ifrit before Chain Lightning in case you want to start farming for items sooner. It depends on what you want!*

You can also Owl it in the Free Market and it generally goes for ~12-15mil. Go find Chief Tamato in Leafre and he will exchange your scroll for the Pentagon and Star

    Leeching

Currently, leeching is the best way to make money in this game. It is the easiest and fastest way. Due to Arch Mages' lack of Holy Symbol, it is highly recommended to have an HS Mule in case you ever want to sell leech, leech yourself, or to train. Making a level 81-84 HS Mule will be super helpful if you are an active leecher. Keep your HS Mule under level 85 to avoid leeching EXP at Ulu2! *I'd recommend training on your I/L while leeching your HS mule to prepare both around the same time*
After you reach third job: +1 Mystic Door (you get one SP point after advancing), +30 Holy Symbol
    [IMG] Love Nakama <3
The best places to sell leech (without your HS Mule gaining exp)
If your only purpose is to sell leech at a constant level while being able to 1 hit, there is death EXP loss. You will lose 10% of your EXP each death.

For more leech spots, refer to this guide: Updated Leeching Guide by @Jooon

    • Ulu Estate 1 (Berserkie and Veetron) *your HS Mule will get leech exp from Berserkie. To avoid, HS then go to Lounge*
    • Ulu Estate 2 (Veetron and Slygie) - ~960 magic to 1 hit (level 130 + elemental wand 7 is good enough) | ~70-80m/hour
    • *BEST!* Ulu City Center (Petifighters) - 1260-1275 magic to 1 hit (most popular and expensive leech | ~140m+/hour)
    • The Dragon Nest Left Behind (Skelesaurus and Skelegon)
    • Singapore: Destroyed Park I (Duku) - 1360 magic to 1 hit
    Farming (FOR MESOS $$):

What most people tend to ask me: Where/How should I make money as an I/L mage aside from leeching? The answer is: FARMING! You can cast Ifrit and (basically) afk for the duration of 2 minutes. Don't forget to have a pet out!
*edit: There have been changes to the pet looting system. Now your pet does not loot the items your summoning has killed so you will have to loot them manually.
    The best places to farm:

    • Stopper Farming: Haunted House - Sophilia's Bedroom (goes for about 380k+ each)
    • Soiled Rags: Phantom Forest - The Evil Dead, Evil Rising
    • Lucky Charms: Phantom Forest - Hidden Evil (50k each)
      • Leprechaun mobs have been fixed in Update 71; they now attack
    Equipment for LUKless:

It is recommended to use Elemental Wand 7 as your end game weapon. It gives 10% ice damage and 5% lightning damage.

    25-28 INT Zakum/Scar/Targa Helmet (unscrolled)/Green Bandana

4 INT Blue Belt (only attainable from Mu Lung Dojo)
    5-8 INT Krexel Ring
    175-181 TMA Elemental Wand 7

    Godly:
    38+ INT Zakum/Scar/Targa Helmet

    - If you want to be super try hard, you could perfect an Auf Haven Circlet (~80+ INT/80+ LUK)!
11+ INT Maple Leaf or 11+ INT Rudolph’s Shiny Nose (only when chaosed)
    12+ INT White Raccoon Mask
20+ TMA Purple Gaia Cape/Yellow Adventure Cape
    32+ TMA Earrings
30+ INT Bathrobe, 34+ INT Brown Doroness Robe/White Doros Robe
    27+ TMA Red Marker/Work Gloves/Yellow Work Gloves/Glitter Gloves/etc...
10+ INT Yellow Snowshoes/Blue Jewelry Shoes (only when chaosed)
28+ INT Horntail Pendant (egged + chaosed)
34+ TMA Maple Shield/Maple Magician Shield
    5+ INT Ring of Alchemist
8 INT Black Belt (only attainable from Mu Lung Dojo - 17,000 points and scrolled)
    8-12 INT Krexel Ring
    185+ TMA Elemental Wand 7

What should I start upgrading first?
In my opinion, I think it is best to at least make sure you have a somewhat decent Elemental Wand 7 in order to start upgrading your overall because you will be able to leech and make money. Once you have enough money to start buying your top tier gear, I'd start with:
Be sure to get Blizzard 30 (~10-15m or less) and Maple Warrior 20 (~1.6b-2.5b)! You do not have to upgrade to Maple Warrior 20 right away, but it is a great upgrade if you want to sell leech. A lot of people prefer buying leech by a mage who can one hit mobs and provide MW20. It will also increase your magic by a lot.
    1. Wand
This is a large purchase but there are a few good Elemental Wand 7's floating around the market at a reasonable price. The price ranges from 2-4b (if you want godly) and you will never have to upgrade again.
    2. Earrings or Shield
I recommend one of these two first because you'll probably be able to get a pretty decent overall for a low price. Adding 4-5 INT for a few hundred million mesos is not worth it yet. If you get earrings first, begin saving money for a better shield, or vice versa.
    3. Mask (Raccoon Mask)
Adding an extra 10+ INT (unless you have a mask already) will be really useful. It not only will help increase your mana, but it will make you stronger. It is one of the more pricier items but a great investment in the long run. You will most likely never have to purchase another one.
    4. Gloves
There are some pretty good gloves out there that you can wear with the required LUK, but have much higher stats and are a cheaper alternative to low level INT gear. If you are able to wear that, you could buy it or spend a bit more to get common INT gloves.
    5. Overall or Cape
Now you can slowly start building up that little INT you were missing from these items.
    6. Alchemist Ring, Shoes, Untradeable Items, Event-related Items
High INT based Alchemist Rings are really expensive, but since you've pretty much upgraded the important gear, you can move on to these items. Of course, while you're upgrading these purchasable items, find a way to get a better Zakum Helmet and Horntail Pendant/Mark of Naricain or other items. If possible, you could also get a Krex Ring (at least +3 int).
Or check out this thread! One Hit Petris

    Event items:
Rudolph Shiny Nose (+5 all stats)
Zombie Army Ring (+1 all stats)
2 Carat Lovebirds Wedding Ring (+3 all stats, +1 magic attack)

Top knotch I/L guide! Couple additions I'd make though:

Personally I like to go MP Eater after Thunder Bolt because it makes it so you use essentially no MP pots. You shouldn't be using Cold Beam that often anyways, so in the interim Magic Claw will suffice. You can go either way, but that's just my personal preference.

For third job Comp actually has better DPS that TS, but TS is so much cooler looking. It doesn't matter too much, but it's something to consider. I'm #TeamThunderSpear all the way though.

These are just minor quibbles from an old I/L nerd though.

Thanks ~f2! I added in your advice about raising MP Eater before Cold Beam!! Thunder Spear > Elemental Comp when it comes to looks :^) and single-target isn't that important because Ice Strike is going to be your main skill, so you could raise either :D

I believe you should get Tele/MP Eater after maxing Thunderbolt. Cold Beam is effectively useless in v.62 imo.

Though you might want to get Cold Beam for one reason - maybe Cold Beam would be more useful in LMPQ against the Tauromacis?

I agree, but as I stated, you could raise MP Eater before Cold Beam, but I think Teleport should be one of the last things to raise because having it at level 1 is already really helpful. If you don't agree, feel free to raise the skills in any order you like :)
    edit: correction.. what @Rob stated!!

:) Yep, it doesn't really matter too much. But for an unfunded newbie, I think maxing tele saves a lot of money with the massively cheaper cost and farther distance.

    Great guide btw!

Well, Ice/Lightning Mages are not meant to be for bossing. They are not the best attackers, especially at your level. As an Ice/Lightning Mage, the best you could do is just level. It's not that hard as long as you leech another character (with HS mule) or train with a friend.
