Holy shit, I totally forgot those stupid cubes gave "Decent" abilities which also killed any uniqueness about classes
Greed and power creep. I think duel bladers were when I started noticing both the most. When they first came out Nexon required you to pay real money to unlock some of their skills and you could level one from 1-20 in a day where it took me almost 2 years of casual play before to get my archer to 68 when gms first came out.
Evan and DB both required NX for mastery books which was pretty bs considering KMS never made you pay for that.
Things that ruined GMS for me: Whenever they had added the potential system, it killed my guild. Instead of gathering a bunch of people to run bosses/raids together everyone started soloing. There was this one hero who would solo all the bosses in cwkpq because he would hit capped damage with brandish Whenever they changed Hero's 4th job skill to hit like 5 times but only make one slashing sound even though the animation show him swinging like 3 or 4 times. I quit Hero and picked up Paladin Whenever they changed Paladin's Blast to this big giant ugly fire sword thing with this hideous sound effect and again it hit a tower of 8 lines of damage but only made 1 slashing sound. I quit paladin and leveled a bishop. Last I played I was really liking the Bishop class but I've been drifting away from it ever since they added that cool down to healing. Also in general the power creep. You just hit way too much damage now and way too many lines of damage.
Well i really like some classes & some skills as well. My favorite's Corsair : D But i hate as well the cube system + Boss AKA "5m-5m range" solo. Before that people need at least 6 people to boss. Now you can walk alone and get all the stuffs just becouse you're a stronger Night lor.. OH WAIT.. its almost like the 77% of everyone who main night lord lol But yeah that suck
When pirates were released. JK. I watched the big bang trailer again and it says "forget everything you know about maplestory". its not wrong.
Around when Pirates or CWKPQ were released it reached its peak, then slowly downhill from there. - Scissors of Karma, killed the way from buyer obtain zhelm and HTP to paying $ to sell them in stores - Other cash shop items like Vicious Hammer, Silver/Gold boxes (had MW 30), Vega Spells, Pam's Song - New classes, though initially I was OK with them, but after resistance classes came out I realised Nexon were on new classes spree. In addition, players had limited time to level certain amount to obtain such as Lilin's Ring and Dragon's Glasses, and pay $ for skill-books on Evan and DB. But the final nail on the coffin would be combination of potential system and big bang update. Though they were ~5 months in gap, at least I enjoyed GMS's last event in between which was OSSS Secret Base. (please put that as event?) I was happy with my Dark Knight hitting over 40k per line, then after potential came out, I was gobsmacked seeing other Dark Knight hitting 150k each. I almost quit GMS for good when potential system forced me to apply Advanced Potential Scrolls on all my equipment and destroying two of end game equipment. But I kept playing all the way until mid 2015, and regretted playing for all these years. I didn't have fun at GMS as much as I used to during pre Big Bang update.
Big bang didnt really ruin it for me, i didnt think enhancements and cubing were that game breaking. Some others might think different but I just REALLY gave up after they revamped everyone's skills, and raised the damage cap from 999K to 50freakin Mill, I think that was the GMS Unleashed update? Oh and level 250 being the max and the release of Hyper Skills. I didn't like that either.
I quit long before that, but to me it all sounds like consequences of cubes and enchantments. When such powerful items are released, they have to increase the cap or people will probably quit. I think the root of the problem that made you quit lies deeper than you think, and that it started growing long before you quit. For me personally it's hard to say when I decided to quit, but I think it happened about the time Big Bang was announced. Just knowing such a terrible thing would come kind of defeated the purpose to play for me. Friends quit too, that played a big role I think.
Big bang, you felt a sense of accomplishment when you leveled before big bang. Now it's how to get to level 250 in 1 day.
It was probably how far they took the cubes that ruined it for me. Despite the p2w nature, I really enjoyed the early era of potential and post big-bang. You could get really good damage and leveled faster, but it wasn't anywhere near to what it is today. With that said, I don't think that potential was a good move for the game as a whole and think that's probably the game's biggest downfall. Since then, they introduced so many different kinds of cubes and pushed the power creep to insane heights along with way faster leveling. Its a singleplayer game where everyone has like a 2m range.
Quit after they dumb down the stats system which ignore accuracy and killed my dexless warrior with all the godly dexless eq i owned.
The Black mage made me return to gms =) What first ruined GMS, Potential and p2W servers. What made me return? 5th Job Matrix system and the EXTREME capability to adapt your playstyle. (Example: Good a bossing, bad at mobbing, You got a 2nd 5th job skill for mobbing.) 3rd Skill for 5th job is coming with The Black Update! REBOOTMS and Release of 25*. Mesos buy you cubes and Flames and only mesos. Truly IronMan mode up till bosses. Death of P2W server leading to influx of Players in RebootMS The Lore of Maplestory involving the conflicts between Explorers, Cygnus Knights, and Resistance up until the Creation of the Maple Alliance to finally lead to the end of Maple and Black Mage.
