I used a different workaround for that error. If spamming "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" in CMD (in admin mode) doesn't work (didn't work for me, the download kept ending abruptly), you could try the method I used.

*As GriZ pointed out, don't do a clean install (for the same reasons).

Download "mediacreationtool" for Windows 10 (32-bit or 64-bit) provided on Microsoft's site (google it, not sure about any rules regarding links on the forum)

Run it, you can choose to either install it directly or create an installation media (usb or iso, I suggest going with iso and using any sort of virtual disk software to mount it), installing it directly didn't work out for me and many other users (got the "Something went wrong" error on every attempt)

Everything else is self-explanatory, all you have to do is let it run its course and mess around with the settings and you should be good to go.

I created my bootable usb using mediacreationtool but didnt add to my post since it doesnt work (can't activate with clean install).
I don't understand how you did it ?
I ended up reinstalling win8 and now my windows update works fine :)

I created an iso, mounted it on virtual clonedrive and ran it as normal (upgraded from Windows 8.1). From there I went with (what I expect to be) standard procedure with a Windows 10 install (downloads all the necessary files, installs them, etc.). Process took about 3 hours total.

Nope, upgraded from a licensed version of Windows 8.1 so I wasn't requested to enter one.

How long did it take to wait for the update when you signed up?

Technically I should still be waiting for my reserved upgrade lol (Microsoft's still sending me emails about it). The method I used circumvents that.

For me, Windows 10 did not like MapleRoyals and it didn't run. I did change the compatibility settings to Windows 7 and "Run as Administrator" and that seemed to have fixed the problem for me. So if anyone else runs into a problem with Royals in Windows 10, try using the little troubleshooting guide thing it gives you the choice to use, it worked for me. :D

Just installed Windows 10 and I'm having no problems running royals in compatibility mode; so far it's a lot smoother than windows 8.1.

    Correct.
The only files that I had were device drivers but they stayed where they were (download and documents folders).

Still didn't get my update :( btw is there a way to get Windows 10 for free (I got Win7 already) and not just update the current os, but install it for scratch? I'm running on Windows 7 since i bought my laptop and sice it's a bit sluggish now I guess it'd be good to reinstall the system

Like I said in my post I don't think we can clean install Windows 10 because our product licence doesn't work (I'm still wondering how i'm going to format my PC now that I have windows 10...)
If you want clean install just reinstall windows 7 and do your windows 10 update from it.
You can force update using cmd as admin: wuauclt.exe /updatenow

I'm a bit late, but Windows 10 has the option to "reset" your computer (what I'd imagine to be equivalent to a clean install).

Start menu > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC

I haven't tried it myself but there are third party sources confirming that it works as a method of doing a clean install.

Edit: Unless you specifically choose to do a factory reset with this method (which is only available on certain PC), it should keep Windows 10 intact while cleaning out your files.

I remember being told that you install Win10, you'll get your CD Keys that's both a public(?) and a private (currently in use by your own computer and cannot be used by anyone else). From there, you can reverse it back to Win7 and do a clean install that will garantee yourself a Win10, installed from scratch.
I was going to wait for the new performance drivers for Win10, but heck, better install it now than never it seems.

Also heard that your with the new Direct X, I believe it's 12 now, will make your old graphic be like it's recently came out from the fabric. Up to a 30% less usage.

Thanks for a nice screenshot. This may mean that Microsoft grew as a company and now has enough resources to try and manage more aspects of the operating system. If they collect all that data, they can surely find and fix slowdown bugs faster.

AFAIK the only "performance improvement" of note with games implementing dx12 was a much lower cpu overhead to to more efficient batching routines.

Does anyone else have a problem with the screen flickering? Like it's completely random, it flickers from black and white for a short time and then rapidly some other times. This only happened when I downloaded windows 10

Uhh you mean the client itself? Or your whole OS? Because mine like literally flickers and has a seizure.
