    Introduction
First of all, welcome to Maple Royals, and we hope you enjoy your time here!

When registering for a game account, please make sure that your password and username are no more than than 12 characters long. (This also applies to character names.) If you've chosen a password that is too long and you are getting errors when you try to login, PM an admin with your account name, date of birth and email address linked to the account. Please also send them the sha-1 encrypted password you want it to be reset to by generating the sha-1 at this website: http://www.sha1-online.com/.

If you're reading this and haven't yet registered for a forum account, please do so now, and remember to activate your account so that you can post. If you're having problems with account activation, please PM a member of staff (preferably an administrator) for help.

Please also take time to read the rules, as they are enforced. The rules aren't there to spoil your fun, they're there so that our players can enjoy fair and legitimate gameplay. If we allow people to get away with cheating, it forces everyone into a situation where the only way to be the best is to cheat. I'm sure you'll agree that this would be an undesirable state of affairs.

Make sure that you download the latest setup from our website before playing, as we have custom .wz files and using clean v0.62 files will result in you dc-ing. The setup files are updated regularly, but check announcements to see if there has been any new files released in the last day or two, and if so, drag and drop them into your Maple Royals folder to replace existing files.

    About Us
We have largely GMS-like gameplay, and offer you plenty of "good ol' days" nostalgia spiced up with a little custom content. The current incarnation of Maple Royals was created by pizza-loving admin, Matt, in May 2013. We were originally a 10x/5x/5x server with more perks than we have now, but although that was fun, a fair number of players found it a little too easy to reach endgame and have godly equips - and then boredom began to set in due to limited end-game content. Also, because we'd gradually reduced the chances to get items which should have been rare, we realised that newer players were at a disadvantage against those who had been there from the start. We decided that the best thing we could do would be to have a server wipe and start over with our lower rates and less perks so that gameplay would be more challenging and longer-lasting. We started over after the wipe on October 1st 2013 and we have no plans to do another wipe in the foreseeable future. =)

Our staff here are all volunteers: none of us make any money out of this. The donations we get cover the monthly running costs of the server, and any money left over is used to make improvements to the server. We've all played the server as regular Maplers at some point or another, and for the most part, we still do play. And before you ask, no, we don't get any staff perks on our legits! =)

    Starting Out
You don't need to roll the dice for your stats - they will be reset the moment you first log into the game. The experience and drop rates on Maple Island are 1x Exp; 2x Meso; 2x Drop. Once you either reach level 11 or leave Maple Island, the rates will rise to 4x Exp; 4x Meso; 2x Drop. If the rates don't change immediately for you (check this by doing ~rates), then you can either CC or relog, and they will change. However, going into Lith Harbor pot shop worked for me, so maybe changing maps also works!

When choosing a name for your character, please avoid names that are likely to be considered unacceptable - for example, Nazi references, racist/homophobic slurs and anything to do with rape or rapists. However, if you thrill to the idea of finding your character suddenly renamed BieberIsHot, PimplyButt, UselessInBed or whatever appeals to the staff's sense of humour, be our guest! ^_________^

Please be sure not to over-level before getting first job. If you do your First Job Advancement late, you will miss out on SP which cannot be refunded.

You have to be at least level 7 to leave Maple Island.

Job advancement works the same way as it did in GMS. For more details, please see Plenty's excellent Job Advancement Guide.

I'd also highly recommend taking a screenshot of your character immediately after getting your first job advance to prove that you did advance at the correct level. This will come in handy if you find you're missing SP at a later stage and need to prove that it was caused by server error rather than by you getting your first job advance too late.

    How to get NX
There are three ways of getting NX:
    1. Vote for us! This is the main way of getting NX and will earn you a total of 8k NX per day. If you have a brother/sister who also plays or are unsure about the rules on voting, make sure you read this page. In case you need a prompt to remind you to vote, we have an ingame vote timer which will tell you when you are able to vote.
    2. Kill bosses. Lower level bosses drop 100/250 NX cards, high level bosses drop 5k NX Maple Leaves.
    3. Join in events. Some (not all) GM Events and seasonal events give lucky winners a chance to gain a little extra NX.
All NX items are permanent and most are tradeable (unless otherwise specified) except Donator Shop items, hired merchants, gachapon tickets and pets. Please note: the Cash Shop inventory currently does not work, so you will not be able to trade NX items that way between characters on the same account.

Donator Shop & Donor Tab in the Cash Shop
You are perfectly welcome to play without donating, and will not be at any disadvantage against those who are able to donate. However, it is thanks to those who do donate that we are able to keep the server running. As a thank you, we give donators Royal Points, which they can spend in the Donator Shop or on items on the Donor tab in the Cash Shop.

Please note that for legal reasons, we have had to change the "Donate" page to "Buy RoyalPoints" as we aren't officially a non-profit making organisation.
    • The Donator Shop offers you a choice of hair and face styles not available from the beauty parlors. The To open this shop, simply do ~donator ingame.
    • The Donor Tab in the Cash Shop offers a selection of NX equipment (including mount covers) and pets that you cannot buy in the regular section of the Cash Shop, plus exclusive chairs designed by the winners of our Design A Chair contest. When buying items from the donor tab, don't forget to select the option to pay with RoyalPoints.
Remember, when you donate, you are not buying Royal Points, you are giving a donation, and we do not give refunds unless the item you have purchased with Royal Points is faulty.

We are strongly against the idea of "Pay2Win", so donator rewards are purely cosmetic and do not give donators any advantage over regular players. Please note that the attack-boosting skills of donator pets have been disabled.

There are also small forum advantages to being a donator, plus you get a nice gold name. If you want to have donator status on your forum account, don't forget to include your forum username when filling out the donation form!

    Gachapon
We have custom gachapons which are available to players who are level 50 or higher. The reason why we set this level limit on gachapon is to prevent vote abusers from easily exploiting it on multiple accounts with very low level characters. To find out what items you can get from gachapon, check out this guide to gachapon by @maggles.

Please note: we closed EXP Gachapon back in summer 2013 and do not plan to re-open it. We may at some point add Ludibrium, Orbis or El Nath Gachapon.

    Custom Drops
I think Cody explains it best:

For a more detailed explanation of Godly Items, read Matt's post on the subject.

    Hired Merchants
Hired Merchants are available for purchase for 10k NX from Fredrick in the FM once you are level 16 or above. Like the majority of other NX items, these are permanent. When setting up your store, we recommend that you first add just one item, open your store, then immediately start store maintenance and add the other items. This will minimize the risk of two players accidentally setting up their stores one on top of the other.

When you sell an item in your hired merchant, the mesos go to Fredrick and you can reclaim them from him. When you close your hired merchant, you will need to reclaim your items and/or mesos from Fredrick.

Hired merchants will automatically close 24 hours after they were opened or if there is a server restart.

"Owls of Minerva" are now available from Fredrick in the FM for 3 million mesos each. These aren't identical to the real thing (they currently don't list items by cheapest price first and we're still unblocking certain items) but they're pretty close. One piece of advice: before using an Owl, make sure the item you're searching for isn't in your own store. The Owl searches every store in the FM on that channel, including your own, and if you're the only one selling this item, you'll have wasted an Owl! The Owl of Minerva in the Cash Shop doesn't work and has been disabled from purchase.

    Getting to the FM
The FM can be accessed the regular way, but if you want to get there quickly, the green "Trade" button towards the bottom right of your screen will warp you there. It will also remember your location, so that when you exit the FM, you'll be warped back to the map you were on. The "Trade" button cannot be used from Maple Island.

    Beauty Parlors
To change your face, your skin colour, your eye-colour or your hair, simply go to the hairdresser, plastic surgeon, cosmetic lens seller or skincare expert of your choice and purchase a ticket for 1 million mesos. (You can also purchase these through the Cash Shop with NX, but buying them from the beauty NPC of your choice is much better value for money. Most plastic surgeries also sell a full range of coloured cosmetic lenses - including white lenses!)

A Guide to Maple Royals Faces
    Hairstyle Guide

To check the range of hair and face styles available from the Donator Shop, simply do ~donator when in-game.

    In-game commands
To get a list of commands that you can use in-game, do ~help and you'll get a list similar to the following:

This list will be updated from time to time when we have new commands to add. There a few things worth noting about the current commands:
    1. ~storage is no longer available.
    2. A new command, ~uptime, (not shown here) has been added, which shows you how long the server has been up for.
    3. When using ~gm to contact a GM, please wait patiently for a reply. Sometimes GMs may be very busy helping other players, hosting events, tracking down hackers/botters, replying to forum posts or working on bugfixes, amongst other things. If a GM contacts you via whisper, it's OK to use whisper to reply to them - they will get your messages. However, always use ~gm each time you need to initiate contact with a GM. Do not try to contact GMs via Smega.
    4. ~gm (without an added message) will open up the Maple Admin and give you a dialogue box in which you can ask the Maple Admin a question. (The Maple Admin's knowledgebase is currently fairly limited.)
    5. ~joinevent and ~leaveevent should be self-explanatory and will only work while a GM Event is on.
    6. ~togglesmegas gives you the option to toggle smegas on and off. This command currently doesn't work properly for Item Smegas - it only hides your own!
    7. If you're slightly confused as to how to use the messages command, here's the clear explanation on how to use it. To see the way the messages look with a variety of settings, go here.
    8. New command! ~servertime will give you the time, date and day of the week in server time.

    GM Buffs
GMs will occasionally give out buffs in the FM Entrance, Channel 1. The buffs we typically give out are Haste, Hyperbody and Bless, all of which last for 30 minutes. (GM Bless adds Magic/Weapon Attack.) On special occasions, we may give out additional buffs, but please don't demand them.

    GM Events
Although we try to hold GM Events on a regular basis, hosting daily events isn't always possible. We do, however, typically host a few GM Events per week, and have a wide variety of events, including custom ones. When joining a GM Event, it is best to warp to the FM via the Trade button before doing ~joinevent, in order to be able to return to the map you were on afterwards. Please listen to and follow the GM's instructions once inside the event or you may be kicked from the event. You are not allowed to join a GM Event on multiple characters.

    Seasonal Events
We have held a number of seasonal events so far, including Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, Easter and our Anniversary in May.

    Marriage
Matt has written an excellent guide on how to get married in Maple Royals. Marriage is a little buggy, but if you follow Matt's instructions properly, it should work. The proposal appears to not work properly, but has in actual fact worked, and you will be able to carry on with the rest of the procedure just fine. In the event of something going wrong please do ~gm ingame and/or post on the forum under Character Issues and we will sort things out for you as soon as possible.

Update October 2014: High Priest John is now able to perform divorces as well as marriages!

    Transportation
The majority of in-game transport is instant, with the exceptions of the optional Ellinia-Orbis boat ride and the elevator from Ludibrium to Korean Folk Town. You will not actually see the ship coming in, nor will you see the door on the elevator open and close, so you will need to click on the relevant NPC to find out when your transport has arrived.

The Ellinia-Orbis boat ride comes complete with the crate to break open for the second Maple History Book and also has the normal chance for you to encounter a Crimson Balrog. To skip the boat ride and warp instantly to Orbis/Ellinia, you will need to pay 25k mesos extra on top of the price of your normal boat ticket.

    Buyback
NPC-ed your Facestompers by accident? Now you don't have to worry too much if you accidentally NPC something you really wanted to keep! Just type ~buyback straightaway after making the mistake, and you will get the option to buy back your most recently NPC-ed items.

    Custom Crafts
The level 64 Maple Shields are crafted by Mia (the balloon girl) in Henesys. You will need to give her the following items:

    Maple Magician Shield:
    1 x lvl 20 Maple Shield
    3 x Wisdom Crystals
    20 x Screw
    20 x Processed Wood

    Maple Warrior Shield:
    1 x lvl 20 Maple Shield
    3 x Power Crystals
    20 x Screw
    20 x Processed Wood

    Maple Thief Shield:
    1 x lvl 20 Maple Shield
    3 x Luk Crystals
    20 x Screw
    20 x Processed Wood

To forge various iTCG equips such as Facestompers, Glitter Gloves, Stormcaster Gloves, Crystal Leaf Earrings, Infinity Circlet and Neva, to name but a few, go along to the Glimmer Man in NLC. You will need the relevant Forging Manual, which can be obtained from NLC Gachapon, plus a number of other items, depending on what you wish to make. The special items (such as Crystal Shard, Black Versal Materia and Pharoah's Wrappings) which are needed to make your itcg equips can also be found from various gachapons.

Plenty has written an excellent iTCG guide - I'd recommend checking it out!

    Quests
The majority of quests, including those required for job advancements, to fight certain bosses and to gain 4th Job skills, work. For a list of non-working quests and to report bugged quests, go here.

    Party Quests
    Working Party Quests
    Kerning PQ
    Ludibrium PQ
    Ludibrium Maze PQ
    Amoria PQ
    Guild PQ

Zakum PQ and Horntail PQ also work. You'll only need 3 people to do HTPQ.

    Partially Working Party Quests
Ariant PQ (don't bother until we've fixed it!)
    Henesys PQ (very buggy)
    Orbis PQ

    Non-working Party Quests
    Pirate PQ

    Currently Disabled Party Quests
Monster Carnival PQ - disabled due to glitch exploitation

    Bosses
There is a list of all the bosses currently in Maple Royals here. This guide is well worth reading, as it lists the respawn times for all bosses. One of the main differences between here and version 0.62 in GMS is that the area bosses only spawn once every 4 hours here. Please note that although bosses will normally respawn when the server is restarted, if there have been frequent server restarts in a short space of time, the staff will kill the bosses prior to opening the server to players.

Mac users are advised to use BootCamp and run Windows when killing major bosses such as Zakum or Horntail, if possible, to avoid the risk of DCs. Alternatively, you could run Windows Parallels on your Mac.

    Bugs
It's a good idea to check out the list of Current Bugs & Glitches to avoid running into any unnecessary problems. To report a bug, go here.

    Non-version 0.62 Content
    • Hair and face styles from later versions can be bought for RoyalPoints. Do ~donator ingame to browse through or choose one of these newer styles.
    • NX Equipment and Mount Covers from later versions can be bought for RoyalPoints. These can be found on the Donor tab in the Cash Shop, along with some MapleRoyals-exclusive chairs.
    • Roofus, brother of Doofus from Henesys, allows Islanders to buy Pet Food and Pet Guides - for items, rather than money. You can find the reclusive and rather shy Roofus hiding out on a map near Amherst. Custom NPC, created for MapleRoyals.
    • Temple of Time - currently minus Pink Bean. ToT can be accessed via Leafre Station.
    • Ulu City, including Krexel. Ulu City can be accessed via the Trucker map in Singapore.
    • Krexel has boosted experience and drops the Almighty Ring (+2 to Str, Dex, Int and Luk).
    • Versal Pigs (Christmas-only mob) - similar to their cousins, the Golden Pigs, but with a penchant for stealing festive food. Custom mob, created for MapleRoyals.
    • Some NPCs, including Mei Mei (the donator NPC) and the Christmas Tree are from different versions of Maple Story.
    • A handful of exclusive custom equipment items have been created for and given out during specific events - for example, the New Beginnings Ring, which was given out to players who started within the first 72 hours of the server coming back up after the wipe at the beginning of October 2013.
    • Magatia (which came out in v63).
    Support
If you require help from a GM, the two main ways of going about it are:
    1. do ~gm ingame;
    2. post on the forum in the appropriate section.
How ~gm works: type "~gm" (without the quotation marks!) followed by a short message clearly explaining your problem. Wait for about 15-30 minutes, and if you haven't had a reply, try again. If you've already made a thread in the support forum and been asked to do ~gm ingame to be refunded/rewarped, keep trying ~gm from time to time until you get hold of someone.

Don't try to contact a GM via Smega or via the Shoutbox. The Shoutbox works ok as somewhere to get yes/no answers to simple questions (eg: "Does this server have cooldowns on mage ultimates?"), but it is ill-suited to discussing support issues in depth. Asking for a GM in the Shoutbox typically just annoys people, especially when you don't say why you need one, or if your problem isn't urgent.

Please do not PM a GM on the forum without good reason or unless specifically asked to. Occasions where you should PM a member of staff include:
    • Reporting something that is potentially abusable/exploitable.
    • Giving private information such as your account details, IP/MAC address or date of birth. Do NOT post your ingame account name on the forum, even if a member of staff asks you to do so; PM the information to a member of the admin team.
    • Contacting a member of the admin team to get more information on why you have been banned for vote abuse.
Please be aware that unless you need to contact a member of staff privately for any of the above reasons, you stand a much better chance of your issue being dealt with sooner if you post it in the correct forum. Having your issue posted where everyone can see it increases your chances of somebody coming along fairly soon to deal with it. Sending a PM to one or two people, however, makes it more likely that your issue will be accidentally overlooked if those staff members are busy or have - as they often do - a lot of PMs to deal with.
The "Report Player" function that you can access by right-clicking on a player is of limited usefulness. It's fine for reporting a hacker or a botter (although doing ~gm works fine for this, too), but it's fairly useless if you want to report someone for scamming, harassment or advertising. If you want to report someone for one of these last 3 offences, it's best to report these under Report Abuse on the forum. Scamming is usually best reported in Minor Offences, but, depending on the nature and severity of the offence, it may occasionally warrant the scammer being temporarily banned.

    FAQ
    1. Am I allowed to have more than one game account? - Yes.
    2. Do you have an All-In-One Shop? - No.
    3. Is Leeching allowed? - Yes, leeching and self-leeching are allowed, although some people frown on it.
    4. Do you hold 2x Experience events? - No, except as compensation for the rare occasions when we have experienced a major rollback or serious downtime.
    5. How do I become a member of staff? - Fill out this application form and post it in Staff Applications. When people ask me how to become a GM, I usually advise them to spend time playing the game, getting to know the community and getting themselves known and accepted ingame and/or on the forum before applying. If you are applying for a position as a developer, we will ask to see a sample of your work.
    6. My anti-virus program says that the Maple Royals client is a trojan/virus! Is this true? - No, don't worry, it isn't! This is what's known as a false positive: in other words, your anti-virus program wrongly suspects the client of being a malicious application. Simply add MapleRoyals.exe to your anti-virus program's list of exceptions and all will be fine. Nobody has ever found a real virus or trojan in our game files.
    7. Does this server have cooldowns on mage ultimates? - No.
    8. Why is account-sharing a bannable offence? - The reasons include cheating, gaining an unfair advantage over other players, jeopardising your account security and wasting staff time by not being prepared to take full responsibility for the consequences. Remember, we do actually help people who are geunine victims of remote/account hacking. For a full length rant on the subject, go here.
    9. What are the N-word and the F-word and why can I get banned for using them in all-chat or Smegas?
      • N-word: Derogatory reference to a black person (rhymes with "trigger").
      • F-word: Homophobic word which rhymes with "bag" or "maggot".
If you hang out with people who use these words casually and regularly and aren't offended by such words, you need to understand that these words are still racist/homophobic slurs and are still frequently used as insults. Apart from as British slang for a cigarette, I've never seen the shortened form of the F-word used as anything but an insult, although its usage can range from casual matey name-calling to outright hate speech. The "-er" form of the N-word is almost always used as an insult; the "-a" form varies in its usage from a greeting to gangsta-rap-speak to an insult. And yes, I'm talking about the way Royallers use these words.

You are welcome to use these words amongst friends - in buddy chat, guild chat or whisper - but please don't use them publically, as they are not universally acceptable and a fair number of people do find them offensive. The reason we disallow the public use of these words but allow swearing is that these words are slurs, and therefore have derogatory/discriminatory origins or meaning. And just in case you need to ask, hate-speech and racist jokes aren't acceptable in public, either.
    10. Are you planning on adding any new job classes? How about the Potential system? - No. We do update with new content, but it's mostly additional training areas, PQs, new events or NX items that do not have an impact on gameplay.
    Coming Soon...
At some point over the next few months, we will be moving over to a new source, which has been written from the ground up by our developer Kevin (aka Karven). At the moment, it is too early to annouce any details, but I would like to put people's minds at ease on a couple of points:
    • We are not planning a server wipe.
    • We do not intend to nerf any of the current content, so if anyone is worried about wrong-element penalties being introduced for Bishops using Elemental weapons, don't be!
    • We may, however, need to adjust any new content we bring in so that it doesn't render aspects of the current content redundant.
    • We fully intend to bring CPQ back with the new source.

I've added quite a bit more now - would very much appreciate it if people could look it over to see if I've made any errors or omissions etc.

I think it's worth mentioning your Hired Merchant automatically expires after 24 hours or after a server check, and that all bosses respawn after a server check or restart.

Also found an error here, nothing big (you forgot the ")"):
    Otherwise, looks great! :)

I'd be willing to revise the Hairstyle guides and complete them once I have spare time.

    Looking good Kat!

Here are maybe some suggestions based off your old post here(http://royals.ms/forum/showpost.php?p=41015&postcount=2):

Perhaps a subsection on Server Updates could include what you typically carry out during server checks, such as fixes and maintenances etc. And it can also talk about planned future updates, like Ulu City, ToT and revised v83 skill tables. By extension, this subsection can also contain any similar customized content.

And maybe a small snippet about how racial and homophobic slurs are bannable offenses? Since that is the particular offence which seems to elude most new players. (and vote abuse is already covered under Voting for NX)

Lastly, a section for How to seek Support, advising the players with links + suggestions to the various Support sections especially Technical Help, Character Issues etc. That would improve awareness of the various channels for seeking support, should any issue crop up for them.

Thanks for your hard work Kat! This guide is especially invaluable to many who are starting a new private server.

Thanks for the feedback, Teddie! I think it probably is worth mentioning and explaining the racist/homophobic slur thing clearly and a bit about the support sections (plus the ingame report character function, which I forgot to mention) would definitely make sense.

I don't think there's a point on doing a section specifically on what we do during server checks, because it's completely different every time and because we make a post in Announcements whenever there's an update worthy of note or if the server is going to be down for more than a short time. It probably wouldn't harm to point people in the direction of the announcements section, though.

I should probably do a "Coming Soon..." section at the end and mention ToT/Ulu City as that is something people wouldn't expect to find in a v0.62 server.

Oh and I've noticed there's been quite a number of queries about iTCG items and such.

Perhaps a subsection can be dedicated for Custom Crafts like how to obtain SCGs, cilbis and their respective ingredients. It could include NPCs like the Glimmer Man, the girl from Henesys who forges shields and any other NPCs with similar functions.

Once again, thanks for the dedication towards this!

Hey, thanks for the guide! Really helpful.
Just wanted you to know that most of the links are broken. They only go to an "error" screen--it might be related to the forum update that happened today.

Thanks for letting us know, hopefully our wonderful web developer @Chokladkakan will be able to conjure up a fix to redirect the vBulletin threads to the correct XenForo threads.

I would like to mention that the end of the guide (the Coming Soon... part) is outdated. Temple of Time and Ulu City have been implemented and are open to the public. :)

Have updated this guide quite a lot and also added anchor tags for ease of navigation to the section of your choice. I'm aware that I haven't quite finished the "Support" section yet, nor have I mentioned the Vote Timer. Is there anything else that I've omitted, typo-ed, given wrong information on or currently have outdated information on?
