Hello Everyone, I am ecstatic to finally release the result of the MapleRoyals 2020 Census. I initially planned to release the results somewhere around the Halloween Patch 2020 Patch, due to a series of unforeseeable events, I wasn’t able to commit to this project. Since I do not want to let down the players who taken their time to answer the census and I can't find any respite in my situation anytime soon, I have decided to release the results chuck by chuck, so it will much more manageable for me. For that, I offer my most sincere apologies for the long delay to both the community and staff members who has place their trust on me. Now for the results. Over 300 of our community members has kindly spare me some of their time to complete this census, I have even received messages from community leaders and players who either send the census to their personal group channels or use Google Translate to fill up the census as it was not available in their native language. For that, you have my deepest gratitude. I hope this census will provided some tangible insights that both the community and staff members can use to make in their judgement and learn a little more about server. Thank you! Spoiler: 1. Which class do you consider to be your main? (337 respondents, 337 votes) • Night Lords are most pick mains on this server, with about 20.8% ~ respondents picking it as their main. No other classes comes in close, this broadly aligns with what the community seems to think on what is the most common main on server. • On the the opposite end of the spectrum, Fire/Poison Archmage (0.59%) barely a blip in the radar, followed by Marksman (2.97%) and Ice/Lightning Archmage (4.51%) gather the least amount of votes for a mainstream class. This is a sharp decline for Fire/Poison Archmage, when it was the eighth most popular class, making it more popular than choices like Corsair, Marksman, Buccaneer and Paladin. • While, both Islanders and Beginner gain (0.59%) of the votes. Spoiler: 2. What job(s) do you regularly play on MapleRoyals? (337 respondents, 879 votes) Within expectation, Bishops and Night Lords continue to have a stronghold as being the most popular class in 2020. With more than half of participants (56.4%) pick to play Bishop on a regular basis, followed by Night Lords (34.1%) I’m surprised to learn after getting past the obvious choices, Dark Knights are the third most played class, with about a quarter of participants (24.6%) said that play them on a regular basis, followed by Bowmasters (22.2%) and Heroes (21.4%). Spoiler: 3. What is the highest level you have reached on MapleRoyals? (115 respondents, 115 votes) Most of the respondents who answered this census have reach endgame status. However, is likely to be bias and skewed towards active players/forum users to use the forum frequently and also engaged with the server for longer, while newer players are less likely to frequent the forum. (338 respondents, 338 votes) • This is in line with the results from 2017, that a majority of players prefer to play in the game in windows mode. Spoiler: 5. Which version of the client do you mainly play on? (338 respondents, 338 votes) • With over 7/10 of players mainly playing on the higher resolution. It seems the introduction of a larger resolution client is overwhelmingly positive as 70% of participants use it as their main client. It will be interesting to hear from players why so! Spoiler: 6. (337 respondents, 337 votes) • While I expected Channel 1 to be the top choices for players, I didn't know how big the lead is. • It will be interesting to ask in the future do players have a preference for luck based activities such as using the gachapon or scrolling. Spoiler: 8. Which year did you join MapleRoyals? (336 respondents, 336 votes) • Unsurprisingly due to the worldwide disruptions and lockdowns brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, I have expected the year 2020 to bring in a large influx of new players. Now we have the data to back it up, we can observed almost a quarter of participants (23.8%) said they joined in 2020. That is more than the players who joined in 2018 and 2019 combined! • While this is a similar experience by other private servers, it is expected we will also lose a portion of this influx. As the vaccines began to roll out, countries around the world will gradually jumpstart their economy. It will be interesting to how much of the new player base we can continue to retain. • On the side note, it is nice to know that the server has continued to engage a significant number of players from 2013/2014, making 11.8% of the respondents. (338 respondents, 338 votes) • Within expectations, a large swaths of players are within the 21 to 27 years old age bracelet, representing about 58% of the server. • Using this, we could attempt to guesstimate as what age did the respondents first experience MapleStory. Korea and Japan 2003 (18 years ago), 3 to 9 years old North America 2005 (16 years ago), 5 to 11 years old SEA region 2005 (16 years ago), 5 to 11 years old EU region 2007 (14 years ago), 7 to 13 years old Spoiler: 10. Is still good to know the server has a significant number of players who identify as females (17.3%) • In 2017, the ratio of female to male is 1: 4.7, and in 2020 the ratio is 1: 4.68. Spoiler: 11. Which region do you live in? (338 respondents, 338 votes) • In 2017, the majority of the playerbase hailed from Asia (41.3%), with North America (33%) being a close second. In 2020, players from North America have dwarfed Asia with a ratio of 17:9. • Is nice to know the share of players from the Middle East, Europe and South America has occupied a significant portion of the community. (338 respondents, 338 votes) • This was one of the more interesting questions I wanted to know answer to. It is surprisingly to me to learn that it is almost a split between players who had experience with MapleStory (MS) private servers and players who said MapleRoyals is their first MS private server. • A little of more than half of respondents (57.4%) said that MapleRoyals is not their first MapleStory private server they had played. It will be interesting to learn what are the factors that drawn them in staying with MapleRoyals instead of other servers. Maybe can we learn to improve the current server's strengths and learn the mistakes of others. Spoiler: 14. Have you played with other MapleStory private servers after MapleRoyals? (337 respondents, 337 votes) • Almost 2/3 of respondents of said they stay in MapleRoyals after playing it. If we take it at face value, it does show the current server has a good retention rate for players, as they decided this server is right for them. • However, I suspect the chart is much more bias towards No response, as we have seen there are significant number of new players joining in 2020 and yet to tried other servers. 15. Explanation • Server stability - A player's connectivity with the server (Client, connection, lag etc) • Safest bet - A player's perception of the longevity and lowest risk of the server being closed down. • Established foothold - It means the player already has established resources here to help them to progress the game. As we can see from the chart above, about 14.1% of respondents commented that MapleRoyals's large population is an important factor for them to come and stay here. Followed by the server's community (10.3%), Nostalgic/Old School vibe (9.6%) and Rates (7.7%). We can make the connection that MapleRoyals's position of being the top MapleStory private server generate a continuous positive feedback loop of attracting and retaining players. If we lose the lead, we might get a weaker loop and tougher competitions with younger private servers in maintaining and attracting new players. Bear in mind a good community is also related to the population of a server, a high population count also contribute to an active and more variety of groups. Saying that, is also good to know we as a community also have a significant part to play in retaining new players here. Spoiler: Comments Legends, OSM, MapleGlobal, countless others. Multiclient 2. Leeching 3. Mule 4. HP wash 5. Buggy event (only a little though) So I didn't stay long there. Back to Royals because already playing here for a year. Staying because: 1. I have almost every basic set builded up 2. More achievement can be pursue 3. Better & active community/forum 4. A good balancing in game system (jobs, market, HP wash alternative) no comment None MapleSaga,StoryMS,OriginMS. and much more. Latinms maplelege ds MapleSaga, MapleLegends. I choose this because the stable client, friendly exp/meso rate. I spend most of my time here already Croosade. Chose Royals because Extalia doesn't exist anymore and the exp rate of the server is more fun than Legends's croosade, maplelegends, picked mapleroyals due to population and community ariesms, extaliams, mapleleaf. mapleroyals has its problems, but proves to be stable, and is also easy to pick up because i've played since the beginning. i don't want to invest time into other servers to have them shut down in the end like extalia did. MapleLegends. But it just wasnt populated enough bcuz this server has the most people soooo much people than korean private server KMS p-server but it got shut down by Nexon. I heard royals ran for 3 years by the time I joined so security was the top priority. Old maple ClassicMS, MapleGlobal, Old School Maple , ExtaliaMS, all closed down in the end (R.I.P) and Royals have been the only consistent server through the years, and I'm very glad for that. None Other server had rebirth system to other jobs and it was interesting but I wanted old grind. MapleDestiny, LeafMS. Chose Royals because of the community. Played some during middle school. Idr the names. i dont remember, it was a long time ago. I like this version of maplestory. Legends and Croosade, I choose royals because of it's stability MapleLegends, MapleSaga and Croosade. I’m actually currently undecided between Royals and Legends High rates, QOL changes, ingenius staff, and high population Yes Mapleroyals has kept the original things best together and wiped oud rwt, pay to win, etc the nostalgia maplelegends, that arian server. but mapleroyals had the largest number of players so i stayed I trust that Mapleroyals will remain open/available in the long run. Some that got closed already and I think I tried legends once? Also tried the low version ones like Phoenix but quit cause it was too dead there and boring to level MapleLegends Nostalgic. Lasted longer than any private server. Highest number of active players. I tried StoryMS before, in the end I came back to MapleRoyals because our community is huge and friendly. Mostly stay on Royals because of prior progress, and no other server is appealing enough to overcome that momentum ExtaliaMS, Maplelegends. stuck with royals because i quit the other two and wanted a fresh start I have played many Private Servers over the last 10 years. Royals is special to me due to its community and after trying anything from 1-9999x exp I prefer the slower servers. Also for a Private Server to have an Islander Community is fairly rare. Here we even sometimes see a GM on the Island and we can participate in most Events. Random choice really, probably the popularity of it None Tried several in the past, chose Royals during COVID-19 tried some servers that has rebirth system (high exp) and it bored me really quickly. MapleLegends, haven't returned to them because my PC security keeps deleting it no matter how many times I mark it as an exception. Only been playing MapleRoyals for two weeks. came with friends, stayed for the peoples was a long time ago, can't even remember the name I play multiple servers on and off. Royals is one of them. Maple Legends , I passed to mapleroyals because I had a corsair in legends and it was a tricky job for me to boss with , so I stopped to play it and decided to make a fresh beginning in Royals instead. Biggest Player Base nostalgic and challenging. I don't remember the name, it was many years ago. MapleLegends. Got banned RIP. Don't remember the names, tbh. Royals for life now, though. I have tried playing on MapleLegends, MapleSaga and Croosade. Of all the private servers I have played so far, Royals has the biggest, most active and friendliest people I have. Oh, an active and huge free market too. I have tried playing on MapleLegends, MapleSaga and Croosade. So many I did not choose I haven’t played a private server in over 6 years, forgot the last ones back in 2013 chickenms and more, started maple royals in 2020 cause of covid I’ve tried every pserver, playing royals because of its player count and old school vibes MapleRoyals is the only private server I have continued to play for more than a month or two. I really enjoy the community, how populated it is, the content, and just the fun times I have playing. I've endured tough times in my life lately, and I've found the friends I've made here to be my best support system. I don't really do much "playing" of Royals, as in I don't really boss or train, but just socializing with the people here is how I spend my time after work, and I enjoy the conversations and people. Croosade + more | My guilds and friends brought me back to royals Rien Old School Maple, Maple Home, AriesMS Sweet spot for exp multiplier (not too rough on those who have commitments irl) MapleLegends Kastia, MapleLegend I played plenty over the years. I stuck with mapleroyals because its the closest thing to the old maple MapleRoyals has the best community AriesMS, did not enjoy post bb I have not tried other private servers, however I came to MapleRoyals out of nostalgia and I think I was the most popular private server, at least back then and that's how I got here. ExtaliaMS, closed down OdinMS, ExtaliaMS All went down. ClassicMS - joined Royals after they closed. Quit Royals for a few years, joined again this year. I forgot. It was a long time ago. MapleRoyals for the large player base. MapleSaga, CakeStory, MapleLegends ExtaliaMS and a few others over the years. MapleRoyals has had my heart because of the nostalgia and old school feeling. Tried crossade, wasn't playing long enough to get to interact with the community which were all in the endgame, got bored and quitted server closed OdinMS, MapleLegends, some others not that long after the og ones came back to Royals after 7+ years because of the playerbase and I prefer 3.2x exp over 2x KastiaMS Don’t remember, most of the other servers have had too high of a rare to be enjoyed as long as I’ve enjoyed royals for the last half year. Post big bang maplestory private servers but i always prefer pre big bang I was into PS since the OdinMS times to the SydneyMS, FarmerStory, etc times with the 1000x exp, I'm here because that era is completely gone and royals is the nostalgic version of the Maplestory i love. A ton of them. Mostly play on my personal server. Mapleroyals has good economy Game design and people I met there dont remember MapleLegends, have a more helpful community no Maple Legends. Royals has a cool community. Played Croosade, but population decayed fast. Chose MR cuz of a friend DunStory They were some random servers. Mapleroyals had a stable growing community and economy and kept me hooked because of these factors. MapleDestiny, OdenMS. The experience rate was way too high. Maxed level, rebirthered and then maxed level again within 30 minutes. Croosade progressive. Because there's no lag in Royals and it feels rewarding to lvl up, and also, there's a lot of ppl to talk to. extalia, lucid ms, because royals has been my favorite out all the servers i have played I used to play on Croosade, but the version split really killed it. I considered Maplesaga, StoryMS, and Maplelegends. Maplesaga and StoryMS are too high rate for me, while HP washing seems a little bit more necessary on Legends than Royals. All the other servers have too few players to bother with for me. Royals honestly isn't really my ideal server, and just kind of won by default. Crossed, it implement DB, and more class after that. It was perfect if it stopped at Aran and Evan I played Dragonstory back in the day but they closed their server. Royals has been the only other server I've enjoyed because the rates are not high. I enjoy the grind. Kastia & MapleMs. I chose royals because of the friends I play with. Legends, because New Source sucked less afterwards MapleToday, MapleSaga Royals has more support and and it’s very stable. This one is much more like maple in its glory days without being too challenging. Others were too easy/shallow its big Khaini and Slimetales, stuck with Royals since it's bigger and comfy Maple Destiny - Different Styled Gameplay Aries, rydah, chose bc of population Best community and ideal EXP curve I have played Legends for a bit in the past and recently got back into it due to the release of Pink Bean and lack of willingness to introduce harder content on Royals Croosade v92, progressive, old low-rate no p2w gms servers back in like 2010-2013ish. I actually quit royals to play Croosade, mainly because of a promise to get rid of HP Washing (which they did). They had a lot of good things like the hp washing change, however, making money relied heavily on farming items, instead of leech or selling equips to an npc which I didn't like. They also allow account sharing, which means that guilds often will share their bishops, mules, etc. My brother who still actively plays has 11k clean range just from him using his friends' equips. No balance changes either, except for blatantly nerfing only Aran because they were whiting everyone except for NLs and Sairs w/ psb. I think Royals keeps me playing because theres a large playerbase, which makes me feel like my achievements actually mean something. I have people to sell things to, people to buy from, people to interact w/. Progressive was fun because I legitimately enjoyed post-bb, but the server is mostly dead now and you just farm ulu 2 on a luminous and hope for the best. MapleLegends. Constant DC issues made me leave. I don't remember this was years ago, I played Royals due to sisters/friends playing They all got lawsuited by Nexon but Royals is still alive after many years Flowsion Dont remember They all died and I forgot their names (AriesMS?) I mainly played private servers in 2008, Cakestory and XplicitMS. In some year between 2009 and 2012 I joined some very random server that kind of sucked, didnt stay long. In 2015 I got the urge to play again and joined MapleRoyals- it was the first time I had ever seen an old-school oriented private server, and it seemed awesome. Maple Legends, nostalgia factor Extalia, But Matt made this one and I knew him I've played lots and for a while Royals was my top one but I've sort of left once I realized the huge importance the players put on HP washing. It's not fun and makes it so new players are often times excluded, I have since switched to a non HP wash server for the most part but royals still holds a special place in my heart maplelegends. more exp rate than legends Well MapleRoyals is the only server still around. The other ones I played on are gone. Also I played a lot of private servers. I tried MapleGlobal server before ir was down for a 1/1/1 and v1 experience. I still prefer royals, though. With a distance second and third places goes to Neo Tokyo and Lushan (Shaolin Temple) respectively. • Interesting, there a noticeable outliers of players who write ‘Free Market” as their other choices. This can be alluded to that the numerous makeovers that the Free Market has during seasonal events such as the one for the 7th anniversary, was very much welcomed. Spoiler: 17. Maybe they can drop Chaos Scrolls /White Scrolls, so at least these bosses are worth revisiting or something. I have little incentives to visit Pianus, maybe it has a drops gacha tickets? 27. For question 11, it's felt like many Asian got banned due to Major Vote Abuse + RWT...I m Asian myself but I think it's major problem that ppl willing to RWT to save the time on this game and then got perma banned...But I think majority of Asian community is willing to take care of new player and explain the rules & regulation of the server..Still felt shock when the ratio of Asian player drop so hard....
