Well, this is more of a brain fart than a thought-out plan, but after reading this post, I started thinking that there's still room for improvment on explaining the rules of this server to newer players. Sure this suggestion won't suddenly solve all accidental rule breaking, and I'm not excusing anyone who haven't read the rules and saying they are not to blame, but I think that there's still some worth in trying to prevent these sort of things. Changing the quiz: Simply put, I just want this specific quest on maple island to be changed so that the entire part where she explains stuff about ap, sp, lvl to get a job, and whatnot to be replaced with the rules of this server, and that the quiz that follows after that will ask questions related to the T&C. And if we want to be more extreme, we can even have this quest give an item called "Rain's seal of approval", and that Shanks will demand you'll have that item in your possession in order to go on the ship to victoria island. Because lets face it, the things she quizes you about are explained 100 times on maple island already, and I think all the players who come to play royals already knows MS to know most of the crap she "teaches" you. I think most accidental rule breaking comes from the combination of these following reasons: 1. When you start a new server just in hope of trying out this old MMORPG and seeing if it's as fun as you remembered it used to be, you don't really care much about the nitty gritty details of all the rules of the server, expecting you might not actually stick to the game/server. 2. People don't like to read huge walls of text, even if the rules are given to the player both in registeration, and in the first log in, they'll just skip it. Again, not excusing it, just stating fact. 3. Many players that come to royals either have had the experience of the original MS, or another private server. These places might have had their own rules, which made the new player not even question if some aspect of the game they considered normal is allowed on this server or not. So in order to mostly fix reason 2, by having the learning proccess an interactive and rewarding quiz, and not a wall of text, we might be able to inform newer players. Let's use maple island to its designed purpose, and have it actually teach players what they can, and can't do on this server. Sure, people might just randomly click on the answers until they hit the right one like most quizes, but maybe new players will actually read it, and suddenly realize "wait what? account sharing is not allowed?" or whatever. Anyways, idea+rant is over, please tell me what you guys think
https://royals.ms/forum/threads/in-game-quiz-about-t-c.90863/ Suggested something similar a while back and afterwards they did make it so that the royals tip often warns players about account sharing and rwt. I see this these tips multiple times per day now. But yea such a quiz can only help, assuming it doesn’t take much time to implement I think it would also be a great idea if they added this to the quiz for 3rd job advancement given by the black stone at El Nath. I always pay attention to this quiz since I don’t want to go back to get more dark crystals lol
I always believe this and still stand by it, it's not that people don't know they are breaking the rules, but they think they won't get caught. And even if they didn't know the rules it's really on them, as Kai mentioned you're given two whole times to familiarize yourself to them.
I don't really find this being necessary given that the rules are already show at multiple occassions: 1. When you are registering 2. When you are logging in for the first time If user fails to read those 2 instances, it's unlikely he will do so for the 3rd. In any case he will just start selecting random options and hoping to get it right which defeats the purpose.
From my perspective, anything can help. Our goal should be to help to prevent players who have no malicious intent from being banned for simple mistakes as they could become active and contributive members of our community. Ideally we all want more active players, and especially new(er) players as they play a vital role in keeping our market healthy (without active lower leveled/up and coming players lower stat gear loses its value tremendously due to lack of demand and excess supply). While I agree that the onus is placed entirely on the player to read the rules thoroughly prior to playing, we must understand that ultimately not everybody does, and many of those players aren’t seeking to cheat or break the rules despite neglecting to read them, so even though they are responsible for their actions should they break the rules, we as players and staff should try our absolute best to utilize all avenues possible so that we can help these players avoid making such mistakes. Sure, players may avoid it or guess, but even if it were to deter one in ten players from making an unintended mistake which would otherwise result in them being permanently banned, I'm all for it—it’s not like that quiz is providing any potential benefits as it stands. Edit: the idea of requiring players to complete the quiz prior to leaving maple island is great, and an even better idea would be a 10-20? second timer before you can answer each question to help deter random guesses/spam guesses and encourage the player(s) to actually read the question and answers. Tl;dr: it can’t hurt and it can only potentially benefit the server in the big picture, so I support the idea.
I know that its completely their fault for not reading the T&C, but when you see that at least some people claim to have not known the rules, then we as a community need to try and better inform new players about it all. The law system is worthless if one of these three things don't happen: 1. Rules need to be written down, and spread to the general public so that everyone will know what to do and what not to do 2. If someone breaks the rules, judge them 3. If someone is guilty, enforce the law and hand a punishment If the law isn't well known, many will accidentally commit crime, which is not the original goal of a law system Kai, if you believe that making this quest is a waste of time, would you consider my suggestion if ill make a quest script for you guys?
I like this idea but wouldn't announcing bans as discussed before, help more with raising awareness since as Sean mentioned, main problem lies with people thinking they can get away with rule breaking?
The problem isn't with writing the script. The problem is whether would it even make a difference and if it does, by what factor? For what's worth, we added the EULA at login screen for new accounts but we are still seeing almost the same number of rule breakers. So I don't really see how making this quest would make things any better.
I'm against it considering that ban appealing is a thing. If a message will appear "xxx was banned for RWT" but then he appeals and clear his name, he'd still be known as a rwter. Isn't that slander?
There were multiple people in the past who were banned under the suspicion of RWT. They appealed and got unbanned. People around them no longer think they are RWTers as they cleared their name from the ban appeal. Announcements can be made once the appeal is concluded and no-turning-back judgement has been issued. The current issue is that the majority of playerbase aren't active on forum, ban appeals, especially those with a language barrier.
But then it will have to be a manual announcemt, i think GMs have enough nonsense to deal with. Also, not all banned players appeal right away, so where will we draw the line of saying they are banned for sure?
They can possibly announce without mentioning the names (~many people were banned today for botting etc.) and only reveal the names later when an appeal is made and dealt with. Edit: What about setting a giant board in fm showing number of banned people for each category that automatically gets updated everyday?
Not sure if it has the same deterant potential as calling people out. This might be just my opinion, but tbh, if someone wants to go over the rules because he thinks he'll get away with it, then I personally prefer he'd just be banned for trying his luck. I won't bother deterring him, and just wait for him to get caught. The reason i made this thread wasn't to stop rule breaking, its to prevent accidental offenses that can result in perma. We are potentially losing good willed players that were ignorant to the rules when they joined.
I'd like to raise you this. What if they are playing the innocent and ignorant card? Let's really take a step back and think, is two different waves of rules being shoved in your face really insufficient already?
As i said, as soon as the act is done, i have no interest in protecting them. Did you see me once say "don't ban them"? This has nothing to do with it, i want to prevent accidental offenses for future new players. If we'll add more tools that were made to inform the new players, then them feigning ignorance would be an even a weaker excuse than it already is. What's so wrong in me trying to save the one in 100 offenders that honestly didn't have bad intent through prevention?
I believe raising awareness will contribute toward preventing accidental offenses as well. Kai brought up this point: People have a tendency to ignore the NPC dialogue no matter how often they appear during the early days of their gameplay thanks to their ignorance. But if they happen to see something like this every day while they visit FM (Majority of playerbase visit FM on daily basis), they are forced to take in the harsh(?) reality of this server. . I quickly edited a ss from forum for illustration. Maybe the board can be made as an NPC so one can click to view more detail if they actually feel the need to know about the rules that got so many banned that day.
That ss was taken from years ago when FM had a random board in the center. I'm suggesting for reimplementation of one with a specific purpose this time.
I think we should give her idea a little more thought. She is not advocating changing how the server punishes and ban the rule breakers or validating their excuses. But is about how to better inform players who truly didn't read the Terms and Conditions. I mean how many of us truly took the time to read and understand T&C of anything? You will naturally be focused on clicking Agree than considering the consequences of not reading the terms. Furthermore, I think many of us know a lot of players who experience tunnel vision and won't read what in front of them. Spoiler: Tunnel vision in Players For implementation wise, as mentioned by others, I think it could be like the existing chain quest that requires you like over-again if you give the wrong answer like Maple Island's Robin the Walking Dictionary. Let say we use the same format without changing the number of answers, the chance of you passing it without knowing the answer is a mere 14.2% ~. This will help filter out players who skip reading Terms, but you now have to know the terms in order to advance forward to the game. Changing the quests to fit whatever narrative you guys want has been done in this server before. Spoiler: Old Source 3rd Job Advancement Questions
