A Thread of Mostly Random Maplestory Stuff

An interesting discovery from KMS beta file is that apparently Henesys Plastic Surgery and Hair Salon building has a very different color scheme than the one in the final game

How long has it been since I last putting random facts here? Anyway, I'm sure many of you knew about the existence of an item called "Maple Cola" in the files that has an icon of a Pepsi can, for some reason


Apparently, the icon got updated instead of Nexon just removing the file from current Maplestory files, no idea when they made this changes, but yeah

Totally did not learn about this from a recent Youtube video or anything, if you know who you are, you know it

There is three ETC items in the game file related to the NPC Gwin from Sleepywood :


A quest item called Gwin's Bag


Another quest item called Gwin's Diary, with diary entries you can actually read!


And an untradeable item called Gwin's Travel Stories

As for what they are used for, at first, I thought it had something to do with a mini-quest series for Sleepywood from the NPC Ilji, but turns out they're reusing these items, there's actually a different quests that uses these items as well, to which I believe is the earliest usage of them!

Here, you will find Ilji, who seems to have a quest for you!



So here Ilji tells you a bit about their backgrounds...

Conked out? Also Ilji gave you a medicine in your inventory, so lets head to the entrance to Cursed Temple!

And here we have said conked out adventurer, Gwin on sight


Skipped some of the dialogues, but he tells you his name after taking the medicine off of you


After resting for a bit, he asks you if you can help him with a favor


He wants us to hunt for his bag, which was stolen by bunch of Wild Kargos in the temple


It really isn't much of a grind, but here we have Gwin's bag I mentioned above! (yes, that is Megumin)


Pretty much the same description as how it is, definitely was reused from the old quest


We gave him the bag, but it seems like something's missing from the bag...

What key are we talking about?


Interesting... I wonder what are they actually guarding?



Gwin wanted us to find the key from either Tauromacis or Taurospear, which isn't really a hard task


Kind of pointless considering you can just Quick Move to major towns, but thanks I suppose?

[Diary of an Adventurer]

After giving him back the lost key, he asks if we are going back to Sleepywood and wants us to give his diary to Ilji...


...unfortunately, you can't read the diary, but oh well-


And that's pretty much it, just a simple quest and a bit of a letdown, not knowing what secret the Forgotten Shine holds...

The actual quest that these item came from is actually to celebrate MapleStory's 1000th Day Anniversary Event!

The only version of the quest I can find is in Korean, so most of these will be roughly translated to English, so mistranslation can happen here, and this is mostly just a short version of the quests, anyway...

[Tales from the Wind]

It has been a thousand days since the hero's footsteps began for the peace of MapleStory. What happened to the hero who first had the courage to save MapleStory? Rumor has it that John at Lith Harbor, the first person to meet him, might know something about it. After meeting with John, he tells you that he introduced the hero to Manji, so off to Perion we go!


Meeting with Manji, he tells you that he found a trace of the hero's whereabout. Manji also tells you about how the chaos in MapleStory began, and that he has been traveling ever since, defeating monsters.

[Hero's Bag]

Manji told us that the hero appeared 500 days ago with wounds all over his body and told him that he lost his bag. It was said that the hero's future plans were written in the bag, and that bag was stolen by a Wild Boar while he was passing through the Wild Boar region, so off to hunting Wild Boars we go!


After killing bunch of Wild Boars, the traveler's bag was recovered and contained bunch of potions, a Maple Flag, and the hero's diary, where Manji told us to look for clues inside the diary for the hero's whereabout.

So we take a look at Gwin's Diary, here is what's written inside:



(She may grow up to be quite a hottie...haha.)

(I was ill-prepared for the coldness that surely greeted us. Thanks to that escape, I caught a very nasty fever, and I am currently recuperating at Jade's house.)

After reading the entries, we find out that Gwin, the hero's whereabout is located somewhere deep in Sleepywood dungeon, so we head there and manages to find him at the entrance of the Cursed Temple...

It looks like Gwin sacrificed himself to achieve his ideals, so we decided to help him and continue our adventure until the day of peace comes to MapleStory.

[MapleStory 1,000 Day Anniversary Flag]

As a token of gratitude for saving him, Gwin offered to increase the Speed stats on the flag from +8 to +15

[Gwin, John's Hero]

With all that, we finally can come back to John at Lith Harbor, where we can tell him when MapleStory was in chaos, the first person that stepped in and tried to save the world was Gwin, with an extra fact that 22 of January, 2006, was a very special day, the 1,000th day of MapleStory.

So, that's pretty much the entirety of the quest, and what would Gwin's Bag and Gwin's Diary is for, just a simple quest made to celebrate the 1,000th days of MapleStory, which is certainly one of the quests ever. I genuinely have no idea if this quest is in GMS before, so do correct me if I'm wrong, I couldn't find much information regarding it other than the fact that quest logs and names are not translated at all, even though the items and the diary entries are translated (although the last two page has sloppy formatting)

Apparently MSEA does receive this quest too, but it was changed quite a bit, celebrating SG/MY Independence Day instead of 1,000th Day of MapleStory, quest structure is roughly the same, though you are not required to hunt for Gwin's Bag and Gwin's Diary, you start out with meeting Maple Administrator, then meeting Johnson at CBD, Singapore, where you will be directed to Mrs. Ming Ming of Henesys to create an Emergency Kit for Gwin in Sleepywood, where you will be rewarded with Singapore Flag or Malaysian Flag depending on what class your character is.

As for Gwin's Travel Story, it is was a part of the similar-ish 2,000th Day Anniversary event, where you are tasked with collecting around 2,000 stories from monsters or NPCs, where you will be rewarded with 2 fames and a Maple Bandana Red, though I have no idea how this one actually works, but there is other Travel Story ETC item you can obtain from quests so I assume Maple Administrator will hand you quests you need to do to get these items, so yeah
