I know mage summons are difficult touch thanks to people that abuse them for "Summon Farming" but for everyone else out there, I find that the tether range / attack range is too short.

Whenever I'm bossing, half my concentration is taken up teleporting on top of the boss and re-summoning Ifrit so it's in range to attack, before I find my self being knocked back and Ifrit wonders out of range again so I have to repeat the previous step. It is incredibly frustrating.

Is there anything that can be done, without helping the people who abuse summons?

    Hmm, here's an idea:
Instead of summons being dragged around like an unenthusiastic dog on a leash, lets have them basically glued to the character's back.
by that, i mean that when you look to the right, your summon will be slightly behind your back, to the left. And when you suddenly turn the other way, the left, it will quickly move to the other side, behind your back, to the right.
That means, even when you walk, and he attacks, he doesn't freeze in place to finish his animation, he still moves with you, and if you want him to be closer to the ledge of a platform, simply show your back to the boss f3. But considering that he will always be relatively close to you, even when you face the boss, it shouldn't be too far away.
This would mean that their range will feel less cluncky and unwieldy, and would honestly look far less silly.
To compensate for the fact that you can no longer place the summon farther than you'd normally stand, the range can be ever-so-slightly increased.
This should make no difference for summon farmers, but be a big QoL change for any mage that tries to use their summons in conjuction with actual combat.
